When to use przez in the passive (agent = “by”)

In Polish passive sentences, the focus is on the action/result, not on who did it.

• If you don’t mention the doer, you often don’t need przez at all.
• If you do mention the doer, use przez + Biernik (accusative) = English by.

The key rule: przez + accusative (not nominative)

After przez, you cannot use ja, ty, on… (nominative). You must use the accusative form.

Why przeze mnie, but przez ciebie?

• przeze is a pronunciation variant used mainly before words starting with m- (and a few fixed cases).
• In A2 practice, the most important fixed phrase is: przeze mnie.

Remember: it’s the same meaning (“by”), just a smoother sound.

Build it step by step (self-check)

1. Find the result / object you want to highlight.
2. Use a passive form (e.g. jest + imiesłów / był(a/o) + imiesłów).
3. Ask: Who did it? If you want to say it → add przez + accusative.
4. Check the pronoun: przez ja → przeze mnie, przez on → przez niego, etc.

Typical mistakes (and the corrected version)

• Skok był zorganizowany przez ja. → Skok był zorganizowany przeze mnie.
• Raport był przygotowany przez ona. → Raport był przygotowany przez nią.
• Faktura była wysłana przez on. → Faktura była wysłana przez niego.
• Szkolenie było zorganizowane przez my. → Szkolenie było zorganizowane przez nas.

When you usually omit the doer (no przez…)

• When the doer is unknown, irrelevant, or obvious from context.
• Common in formal and professional language (reports, procedures, announcements).

Example: Raport został przygotowany. (No need to say who.)
