What’s the key idea? Dates = “of” forms (Genitive)

In Polish, when you say a full date (day + month + year), Polish usually uses the genitive for:

• the day number (an ordinal, e.g. “17th” → siedemnastego)
• the month name (e.g. “June” → czerwca)
• the year (as an ordinal phrase, often with roku)

Think of it as: “on the 17th of June of 2004” → Polish makes those “of” forms visible in the endings.

Day numbers: which form do I need?

For dates, the day is an ordinal and very often appears in the genitive:

• 1st → pierwszego
• 2nd → drugiego
• 3rd → trzeciego
• 5th → piątego
• 12th → dwunastego
• 21st → dwudziestego pierwszego

Self-check: if you can answer “Which day of the month?” then you likely need the -ego ending.

Months: memorize the “date forms” (Genitive months)

Month names change in dates. These are the forms you actually say:

Pay attention: you say maj (base form), but in dates it becomes maja.

Years: two common patterns (and when you see “roku”)

You’ll meet years in two main situations:

1. Full date (day + month + year): the year behaves like an ordinal phrase, often followed by roku.

   Urodziłem się drugiego lutego dwa tysiące czwartego roku.

2. Only the year (answering “In which year?”): after w you typically use locative + roku.

   W dwa tysiące czwartym roku…

Practical shortcut: if you say w … roku, the year ends like an adjective in locative: often -ym (e.g. czwartym, pierwszym).

The special case: 2000 = dwutysięczny

Only the year 2000 has its own single-word adjective:

• w dwutysięcznym roku
• od dwutysięcznego roku
• do dwutysięcznego roku

But from 2001 onward you go back to the normal pattern:

• 2001: w dwa tysiące pierwszym roku
• 2004: w dwa tysiące czwartym roku

Common traps (and corrected versions)

• Month must be genitive: dwunastego marzec → dwunastego marca

• Don’t use cardinal numbers for the day in dates: dwanaście marca → dwunastego marca

• After “w … roku” use locative: w dwa tysiące czwartego roku → w dwa tysiące czwartym roku

• After “od/do” use genitive: od 1998 roku → od tysiąc dziewięćset dziewięćdziesiątego ósmego roku
