Accusative plural: kogo? co?

In Polish, we use the plural accusative to say that we know, like, have, visit, buy, etc. something or someone.

Accusative plural (Biernik l. mn.) — what is it for?

Use accusative plural when a verb takes a direct object in plural: whom? what?

  • Widzę (I see) + plural object
  • Kupuję / biorę / rezerwuję (I buy / take / book) + plural object
  • Mam (I have) + plural object

The key question: Are we talking about men as people (męskoosobowy) or not?

Step 1: Choose the group — męskoosobowy vs. non‑męskoosobowy

Group Meaning Typical examples Accusative plural behaves like…
Męskoosobowy Men/guys as people (at least one male person in the group) Polak, gość, piłkarz, pan, uczeń Genitive plural (often ends in -ów / -i / -y)
Niemęskoosobowy Women, children, animals, objects, ideas; also masculine non‑personal nouns karta, rezerwacja, nocleg, okno, bilet Nominative plural (often -y / -i / -e / -a)
  • Those guests (men): Znam tych gości.
  • Those cards: Poproszę te karty.

Step 2A: Męskoosobowy — pick the right ending (-ów / -i / -y)

For masculine personal nouns, accusative plural usually matches genitive plural.

Ending When (practical cue) Correct example
-ów Most common; after many “hard” consonants, and after -c, -j Polak → tych Polaków
-i After “soft” consonants and after -l gość → tych gości
-y After “hardened” sounds (often spelled with: rz, sz, cz, ż) piłkarz → tych piłkarzy

Self-check: If it’s a group of men, expect tych + a form like -ów/-i/-y.

Step 2B: Niemęskoosobowy — accusative plural = nominative plural

For non‑masculine-personal plurals, accusative is usually the same as the basic plural form.

Nominative singular Nominative plural Accusative plural (same) In a sentence
karta karty karty Poproszę karty do pokoi.
nocleg noclegi noclegi Rezerwuję dwa noclegi.
rezerwacja rezerwacje rezerwacje Mam wszystkie rezerwacje.
okno okna okna Myję okna w biurze.

Self-check: If it’s not a group of men, use the “normal plural”: te / te + -y/-i/-e/-a.

The “two systems” in one glance (very common exam trap)

Meaning What you often say Example
Men (people) Accusative plural looks like genitive plural Znam tych Polaków.
Everything else Accusative plural looks like nominative plural Kupuję te karty.

Important exceptions & spelling changes you will actually meet

  • -owie in nominative plural → -ów in accusative plural

panowie → znam tych panów; uczniowie → znam tych uczniów; mistrzowie → znam tych mistrzów

  • “Mobile e” (ruchome e) sometimes appears/disappears

chłopiec → chłopców (the e disappears)

zamek → zamki (the e disappears)

lew → lwy (the e disappears)

Mini checklist before you speak

  1. Is it a direct object? (I see/buy/have/book…)
  2. Is the plural group masculine personal? (men/guys as people)
  3. If yes → choose -ów / -i / -y (genitive-plural-type form): tych Polaków, tych gości, tych piłkarzy
  4. If no → use the normal plural: karty, noclegi, rezerwacje, okna

Quick “wrong vs correct” (to catch your own mistakes)

  • Widzę tych Polaki → Widzę tych Polaków.
  • Lubię te goście → Lubię tych gości. (men)
  • Poproszę kart → Poproszę karty. (plural object, non‑personal)
  • Rezerwuję dwa noclegów → Rezerwuję dwa noclegi. (non‑personal)
