What these words are (and why they feel “impersonal”)

In Polish, wolno / można / warto / trzeba / należy / powinno się are very common ways to talk about:

• permission (allowed / not allowed)
• recommendation (it’s worth it)
• obligation (necessary / required / one should)

They are called impersonal because they usually do not mention who exactly must/should/can do it.

• English: “You can… / You must…”
• Polish often: “Można… / Trzeba…” = “It’s allowed / It’s necessary”

Core pattern: one word + infinitive

Most of the time the structure is:

• Można / Wolno / Warto / Trzeba / Należy / Powinno się + infinitive (verb in “to…” form)

Examples (airport context):

• Można zająć miejsca. (You can / It’s allowed to take seats.)
• Nie wolno zostawiać bagażu bez opieki. (You must not / It’s not allowed to leave baggage unattended.)

Meaning & strength: choosing the right word

Negation: where “nie” goes

• nie normally comes directly before the impersonal word.

• Nie wolno zostawiać bagażu…
• Nie można wnosić płynów powyżej limitu. (Not possible / not allowed depending on context.)
• Nie trzeba drukować karty pokładowej. (You don’t need to print it.)

Common mistake to avoid:

• Wolno nie zostawiać bagażu (wrong meaning/structure in this context)
• Nie wolno zostawiać bagażu (correct)

Case reminder: what happens after the infinitive

The impersonal word does not change cases itself, but the rest of the sentence follows normal rules:

• zostawiać + Accusative: zostawiać bagaż
• zostawiać + expression: bez opieki
• okazać + Accusative: okazać dokument

So you are mainly practicing: impersonal word + infinitive, while keeping cases correct after the verb.

“Można” vs “wolno”: a practical rule of thumb

• Use wolno / nie wolno when you mean rules: what is permitted or forbidden.
• Use można when you mean possibility or a neutral “you can”.

In many real-life situations they overlap, but at the airport you often hear:

• Nie wolno zostawiać bagażu… (prohibition)
• Można nadać bagaż tutaj. (permission / practical possibility)

Self-check: do you choose permission, advice, or obligation?

1. If it’s a rule (sign/announcement) → (nie) wolno or formal należy
2. If it’s a benefit (good idea) → warto
3. If it’s required/necessary to proceed → trzeba
4. If it’s recommended behaviour → powinno się

Final quick test: can you say the sentence without “you/I/we”? If yes, the impersonal form is a perfect fit.
