Zdań warunkowych używamy, żeby powiedzieć, co by się stało, gdyby coś było inaczej np. gdybyśmy mieli więcej pieniędzy, czasu lub szczęścia.

(We use conditional sentences to say what would happen if something were different, e.g. if we had more money, time, or luck.)

When to use Gdyby… (Second conditional)

Use this structure to talk about an unreal / unlikely situation now and its result.

Now (hypothetical): “If I had more time…”
Result: “…I would go more often.”

Key idea: Polish uses past forms to talk about a hypothetical present (like English: “If I had…”).

The basic pattern (two parts)

Part 1: IF-clause	Part 2: result
Gdybym / Gdybyś / Gdyby / Gdybyśmy / Gdybyście / Gdyby + past	verb + -bym / -byś / -by / -byśmy / -byście / -by
Gdybym miał czas…	…poszedłbym na basen.

Word order: usually IF-clause first, then result. But both orders are possible.

Normal: Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym na basen.
Also OK: Poszedłbym na basen, gdybym miał czas.

How to build the IF-clause: Gdy + by + person ending

In Polish, “if” here is often one word: gdyby + ending.

Choosing the correct past form: miał / miała / miało / mieli / miały

After gdybym/gdybyś/gdyby… you often use the past form of mieć (“to have”).

Pick it by gender (singular) and group type (plural):

Singular: miał (male), miała (female), miało (neuter)
Plural: mieli (at least one man in the group), miały (no men: women/children/things)

Gdybym miała samochód…	…dojeżdżałabym szybciej.
Gdybyśmy mieli więcej czasu…	…spotykalibyśmy się w tygodniu.
Gdyby one miały pieniądze…	…pojechałyby na weekend.

Building the result: where does -bym / -byś / -by… go?

In the result clause, Polish uses a conditional ending attached to a past form (or placed after a word).

Most common: attach it to the past form: kupiłbym, pomagałbyś, pojechalibyśmy
Also possible: put it after another word: Ja bym kupił (often for emphasis)

Very important: the ending must match the person.

Common trap: mixing real “when” with hypothetical “if”

Hypothetical: Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym…
Real / regular: Gdy mam czas, idę… (Whenever I have time, I go…)

If you mean “not real now”, choose gdyby + past.

“To” in gdyby (to): when you can drop it

Polish sometimes adds to in the IF-clause, especially in spoken language.

With to: Gdyby to było prostsze, skończylibyśmy szybciej.
Without to (also correct): Gdyby było prostsze, skończylibyśmy szybciej.

Rule of thumb: if to is not needed for clarity, you can omit it.

Self-check: do you have all 4 pieces?

Gdyby… form matches the person? (gdybym / gdybyś / gdybyśmy…)
In the IF-clause: correct past form and gender? (miał/miała/miało; mieli/miały)
In the result: conditional ending matches the person? (-bym/-byś/-by…)
Result verb has the right gender/plural? (kupiłbym vs kupiłabym; zrobilibyśmy vs zrobiłybyśmy)
