Subject: że, to, kto...

A subject clause replaces the subject: instead of one word, the whole idea or situation is the subject.

What you are building: a “subject clause” (zdanie podmiotowe)

Sometimes the subject of the sentence is not a noun ("the plan"), but a whole clause ("that the team has a plan").

  • Wiadomo, że… = “It is known that…”
  • Nie wiadomo, kto… = “It is not known who…”
  • Dziwne, co… = “Strange what…”

In Polish, these clauses are introduced by: że / to, że / kto / co.

Choose the right connector: quick meaning map

Connector Use when the clause means… Typical English equivalent
że a fact / statement that
to, że “the thing / the fact that …” (often after evaluation words) the fact that
kto which person (unknown / not specified) who
co which thing / what (unknown / surprising) what

The most common patterns (use these as templates)

Word order: what to pay attention to

Polish keeps a fairly neutral order inside the clause:

  • że + subject + verb: że praca wymaga…
  • kto/co + verb (often): kto będzie…, co szef powiedział…

Important: Unlike German, Polish does not push the verb to the end after these connectors.

  • Correct: Wiadomo, że praca w zespole wymaga zaufania.
  • Wrong (German-style): Wiadomo, że praca w zespole zaufania wymaga.

“że” vs “to, że”: when do you need “to”?

Use to, że when you point to the whole idea as “this fact”. It often sounds natural after evaluation phrases.

Natural Polish Meaning
Ważne jest to, że mamy jasne role. It is important that fact that we have clear roles.
Najważniejsze jest to, że termin jest realny. The key point is that the deadline is realistic.
Dobrze, że mamy plan. Good that we have a plan. (No “to” needed.)

Tip: If in English you naturally say “the fact that…”, Polish often uses to, że.

Self-check: which connector should you hear in your head?

  1. Is it a yes/no fact? → że
  2. Are you highlighting “this fact/this point”? → to, że
  3. Is the missing information a person? → kto
  4. Is the missing information a thing/decision/statement? → co

Mini examples from professional life (copy & adapt)

  • Jasne, że musimy to omówić na spotkaniu.
  • Istotne jest to, że klient zna ryzyka.
  • Nie wiadomo, kto zatwierdzi budżet.
  • Zaskakujące, co wyszło w raporcie.
