What you are building: a “verb noun” (rzeczownik odczasownikowy)

Polish often turns an action into a noun, similar to English cancel → cancellation or begin → beginning.

• Verb = what you do: odwołać (to cancel)
• Verbal noun = the action as a “thing”: odwołanie (a cancellation / the act of cancelling)

You use these nouns a lot in formal speech: offices, HR, legal/medical contexts, procedures.

How to form it (fast decision guide)

Take the verb stem and add the typical noun ending:

What to watch out for (the “why is it different?” part)

• Spelling changes happen in the stem (normal in Polish):
  rozpocząć → rozpoczęcie (ą → ę)
• Some verbs take -cie (not -nie/-enie), especially very short/common ones:
  żyć → życie, być → bycie, pić → picie
• Meaning is usually “the act/process/result” depending on context:
  zgubienie paszportu = the fact that you lost it (the incident).

How to use verbal nouns in real sentences

Think: the verb becomes a noun, so it behaves like a noun in grammar.

• After verbs like prosić o, potrzebować, wymagać, dotyczyć you often need a noun:

These nouns decline. In practice, two patterns appear constantly:

• Quick self-check: if the noun ends in -nie/-enie, Locative after po is very often -niu:
  zgubienie → po zgubieniu

Common mistakes (and how to fix them)

• Mixing the verb with the noun:
  Proszę podpisać zgłosić kradzieży…
  Proszę podpisać zgłoszenie kradzieży…
• Wrong form after “po” (needs Locative):
  Po zgubienie paszportu…
  Po zgubieniu paszportu…
• Forgetting that the next noun often goes to Genitive:
  potwierdzenie zgłoszenie
  potwierdzenie zgłoszenia

1. Is it an action treated as a “thing”? → use a verbal noun.
2. Pick the ending: -ać→-anie, -ować→-owanie, many others → -enie; short/special → -cie/-ęcie.
3. Check the case in your sentence: after po use Locative (often -niu).
4. If it’s “confirmation/issue/report of X”, X is often Genitive.
