Comparison of adverbs: pięknie → piękniej → najpiękniej

In comparative sentences, we compare adverbs and use, among others, niż, od, coraz.

What you are comparing here: adverbs (how something is done)

Words like pięknie (beautifully), modnie (fashionably), drogo (expensively), dobrze (well) are adverbs.

  • They answer: How? (In what way?)
  • They usually describe a verb: Ubieram się modnie. (I dress fashionably.)
  • So you compare the manner: more elegantly / most comfortably, etc.

The 3 degrees: basic → comparative → superlative

Meaning Polish Typical English
basic elegancko elegantly
comparative eleganckiej / bardziej elegancko more elegantly
superlative najeleganckiej / najbardziej elegancko most elegantly

Important: not every adverb can take the short “-ej” form. Many longer adverbs prefer bardziej / najbardziej.

Rule 1: Short form (often): add -ej

  • Comparative = base + -ej
  • Superlative = naj- + comparative
Base Comparative Superlative
pięknie piękniej najpiękniej
modnie modniej najmodniej
drogo drożej najdrożej

Self-check: If you can naturally say it as one compact word in Polish, the short form is often possible: modniej, szybciej, taniej.

Rule 2: Longer adverbs: use bardziej / mniej

If the adverb is long, abstract, or sounds awkward with “-ej”, Polish often uses a phrase (like English “more”).

  • Comparative: bardziej + adverb = “more …”
  • Comparative (negative direction): mniej + adverb = “less …”
  • Superlative: najbardziej / najmniej + adverb
Base Comparative Superlative
elegancko bardziej elegancko najbardziej elegancko
ekstrawagancko mniej ekstrawagancko najmniej ekstrawagancko

Tip: When in doubt, bardziej + adverb is usually safe and correct.

Irregular forms you simply need (high-frequency)

Base Comparative Superlative Meaning
dobrze lepiej najlepiej well → better → best
źle gorzej najgorzej badly → worse → worst
dużo więcej najwięcej a lot → more → most
mało mniej najmniej a little → less → least

Common trap: dobrzej is wrong. It is always lepiej.

Spelling changes (alternations): what to “watch for”

Some short comparatives change a consonant. Learn them as a pair (base → comparative).

Change Example Meaning
g → ż długo → dłużej long → longer (time)
s → ż blisko → bliżej close → closer
t → ć krótko → krócej short → shorter

Self-check: If you see ż or ć appear in the comparative, it is often an alternation, not a typo.

How to build sentences: “than”, “from”, and “the most”

  • Comparative + niż = “more … than”

Ubrałem się bardziej elegancko niż zwykle.

  • Comparative + od is also common (especially with people/things)

Ona ubiera się modniej od siostry.

  • Superlative often answers “in the most … way”

    Na konferencji mówi najbardziej elegancko.

Note: With adverbs you do not change endings for gender/case. It stays: modniej, lepiej, najbardziej elegancko.

“More and more”: use coraz + comparative

  • coraz + comparative = “better and better / more and more …”

Teraz w biurze pracuję coraz lepiej.

Jest coraz więcej modeli.

Fast decision guide (what form should I choose?)

  1. Is it one of these? dobrze, źle, dużo, mało → use the irregular forms.
  2. Does the short form sound natural and common? Try -ej: taniej, szybciej, modniej.
  3. If it is long/complex or you are unsure → use bardziej / najbardziej.
  4. To say “more and more” → use coraz + comparative.

Mini self-test (quick accuracy checks)

  • “I feel best” → czuję się najlepiej (not najlepszy).
  • “more expensive” (adverb) → drożej (not drogo).
  • “less time” → mniej czasu / mniej wolnego.
  • Superlative always has naj- or najbardziej.
  1. In the comparative, we add the ending -ej to the adverb stem, e.g. piękniej.
  2. In the superlative, we add the prefix naj-, e.g. najpiękniej.
  3. We compare longer adverbs using bardziej/mniej and najbardziej/najmniej.
  4. Some adverbs have irregular forms that you need to learn by heart, e.g. dobrze → lepiej.
