Declension of pronouns: wszystko, nikt, nic, każdy

What these words mean (and why they decline)

• wszystko = everything (a “thing” / neutral idea)
• nikt = nobody / no one (a person)
• nic = nothing (a “thing” / neutral idea)
• każdy = everyone / each (person) (a person; behaves like an adjective/pronoun)

In Polish these pronouns change form by case (like “him / his / to him”). The table shows the most common forms you need at A2.

Fast choice: person vs thing

Case triggers you will meet most often

• Dopełniacz (Genitive)
  • after negation with nie ma / nie było: Nie ma nikogo. / Nie było niczego.
  • after many prepositions like bez, od, do: bez niczego, do wszystkiego
• Celownik (Dative) (to/for someone): Pomagam każdemu. / Nie ufam nikomu.
• Biernik (Accusative) (direct object): Widzę nikogo is wrong here (see below). More typical: Nie znam nikogo. / Mam wszystko. / Mam nic is wrong → Nie mam nic.
• Narzędnik (Instrumental) (with/being): z nikim, z niczym, z każdym
• Miejscownik (Locative) (about/after “o”): o wszystkim, o nikim, o niczym, o każdym

The key pattern: negation + “n-” words

Polish normally uses double negation:

• nikt / nic usually go with nie in the verb.

Avoid the English logic in Polish:

• Znam nikogo. → Nie znam nikogo.
• Rozumiem nic. → Nie rozumiem nic(zego).

Two forms that cause most mistakes: “nic” vs “niczego”

• nic is used very often as the direct object, especially after nie: Nie mam nic.
• niczego is common when you mean “not anything of (something)”, or in more formal style:
  • Nie rozumiem niczego. (I don’t understand anything.)
  • Nie potrzebuję niczego od ciebie. (I don’t need anything from you.)

Practical tip: If you are unsure, nic after negation is usually safe and natural in speech.

“Każdy” behaves like an agreeing word (not one fixed form)

• każdy changes by case: każdego, każdemu, każdym…
• It also has gender/number in full Polish (later): każda, każde…

At A2, focus on these high-frequency uses:

• Mianownik: Każdy ma obowiązki. (Everyone has responsibilities.)
• Celownik: Pomagam każdemu. (I help everyone.)
• Biernik: Znam każdego z zespołu. (I know everyone on the team.)
