Declension of pronouns: wszystko, nikt, nic, każdy

Odmiana zaimków: wszystko, nikt, nic, każdy

Zaimki nieokreślone: wszystko, każdy oraz zaimki przeczące nikt, nicodmieniamy przez przypadki.

What these words mean (and why the forms change)

  • wszystko = everything (things, situations)
  • nic = nothing (things)
  • nikt = nobody / no one (people)
  • każdy = everyone / each (people; often “each person”)

Key idea: in Polish these pronouns decline (change form) depending on the case required by the verb or preposition.

Practical shortcut: for nikt and każdy (people), Accusative = Genitive in these forms: nikogo, każdego.

The “negative rule” you must notice

In Polish, after a negative verb (nie + verb), the object is very often in Genitive:

  • Nie widzę nikogo. (I don’t see anyone.)
  • Nie mam niczego / (often) nic. (I don’t have anything.)
  • Nie zostawiaj wszystkiego w namiocie. (Don’t leave everything in the tent.)

Self-check: Is the verb negative (nie)? If yes, ask yourself: “Should this be Genitive?”

Instrumental and Locative: same shape here

In this table, Narzędnik (Instr.) and Miejscownik (Loc.) look the same:

  • wszystkim, nikim, niczym, każdym

Use them mainly after common prepositions:

  • z (with) + Instr.: z nikim (with nobody), z niczym (with nothing)
  • o (about) + Loc.: o wszystkim (about everything), o niczym (about nothing)

Note: In positive sentences you can also say: Rozmawiam z każdym (I talk with everyone).

  2. Is it negative? → often Genitive (nikogo, niczego, wszystkiego)
  3. Is there a preposition?
    • o → Loc.: o wszystkim / o niczym

  4. Giving / showing / telling to someone? → Dative: każdemu / nikomu
