We use the verb mieć in constructions with infinitives (not only with powiedzieć) to express possibility, obligation, necessity, and also distance from unverified information.

What this structure is: mieć + infinitive

Polish often uses mieć (“to have”) + a verb in the infinitive to express:

  • a requirement / instruction (sometimes like an order)
  • a planned / scheduled action
  • an unfulfilled plan (usually in the past)
  • hearsay / unconfirmed information (often with podobno)

Think of it as English “to be to…”, “to be supposed to…”, or sometimes “to have to…”—depending on context.

How to build it (and where the meaning comes from)

Form Pattern Typical meaning
Present mam/masz/ma + infinitive instruction, expectation, plan
Future meaning (still present form) mamy jutro + infinitive scheduled / planned for tomorrow etc.
Past miałem/miałam/miała/mieli… + infinitive was supposed to / was planned (often: didn’t happen)

Key point: the verb after mieć stays in the infinitive (no conjugation).

  • Mamy jutro omówić strategię. (not: omówimy)
  • Masz spakować rzeczy. (not: spakujesz)

Meaning 1: “You are to / you have to” (requirement, instruction)

Used when someone states what must be done (often formal, workplace tone).

  • Masz przygotować krótką notatkę dziś. = You are to prepare a short note today.
  • Macie podpisać dokumenty do piątku. = You are to sign the documents by Friday.

Practical nuance: often sounds like a directive from a superior or a rule, not a personal feeling.

Meaning 2: planned / scheduled (“we’re supposed to”)

Very common with time words: jutro, dziś, w przyszłym tygodniu.

  • Mamy jutro omówić to z zarządem. = We are scheduled/expected to discuss it tomorrow.
  • Mam spotkać się z klientem o 10:00. = I’m supposed to meet the client at 10:00.

Meaning 3: past = “was supposed to… but (often) didn’t”

Past forms of mieć very often suggest an unfulfilled plan (even if it’s not explicitly stated).

  • Miała dostać wyższe stanowisko, ale zrezygnowała. = She was supposed to get a higher position, but she resigned.
  • Miałem wysłać e-mail rano, ale zapomniałem. = I was supposed to send the email in the morning, but I forgot.

Self-check: if you can naturally add “but it didn’t happen” in English, past miał… + infinitive will usually fit.

Meaning 4: hearsay / rumor (often with podobno)

With podobno (“apparently / reportedly”), this structure can communicate information you didn’t verify yourself.

  • Podobno mają zwolnić kilku pracowników. = Apparently they’re going to lay off a few employees.
  • Podobno ma zmienić pracę. = Apparently he/she is going to change jobs.

Tip: this is about source of information (hearsay), not about obligation.

How to choose the meaning fast (mini decision guide)

  1. Is it past? → likely “was supposed to” (often not done).
  2. Is there a time plan (tomorrow/next week)? → likely scheduled/expected.
  3. Is it said like a directive? → likely instruction/requirement.
  4. Is there podobno? → likely hearsay/rumor.

Common learner mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t conjugate the second verb:
    • ✅ Mamy omówić…
    • ❌ Mamy omówimy…
  • Don’t confuse with “I have (possession)”:
    • ✅ Mam zrobić prezentację. (task)
    • ✅ Mam prezentację. (possession: “I have a presentation” = e.g., it exists / I own it)
      Context usually makes it clear.
  • Past form matches gender/number:
    • miałem (male), miałam (female)
    • miała (she), miał (he), miało (it)
    • miały (they: non-masculine-personal), mieli (they: masculine-personal)

What you should be able to do now

  • Recognize mieć + infinitive in a sentence quickly.
  • Decide if it means instruction, plan, unfulfilled past plan, or rumor.
  • Build your own workplace sentences using: mam/masz/mamy/miałem… + infinitive.
  1. When we want to talk about something expected or necessary, treated as an order.
Coś wymaganego natychmiast lub bezwzględnie (Something required immediately or unconditionally)Masz spakować swoje rzeczy! (You have to pack your things!)
Coś zaplanowanego lub oczekiwanego (Something planned or expected)Mamy jutro omówić z zarządem nową strategię. (We are to discuss the new strategy with the management tomorrow.)
Coś co miało się wydarzyć, ale się nie wydarzyło (Something that was supposed to happen, but didn’t)Miała dostać wyższe stanowisko, ale zrezygnowała. (She was supposed to get a higher position, but she resigned.)
Informacja niesprawdzona, zasłyszana (Unverified, hearsay information)Podobno mają zwolnić kilku pracowników. (Apparently, they are going to lay off a few employees.)

Exceptions!

  1. The meaning depends on the context and tense—the same construction can express an order, a plan, or a rumour.
  2. The past tense (miałem, miałam) often suggests a plan that was not carried out.
