The plot moves forward through flashbacks and ellipses, creating a steadily rising dramatic tension. The first-person narrator adopts a very subjective point of view: we mainly follow the main character, whose silences take on strong symbolic value.
Although the style is understated, some regretted an uneven realism; however, everyone praised the final twist and the ending, considered coherent. The discussion focused on the theme of loyalty and on the antagonist, less caricatured than expected. Several readers interpreted the non-linear chronology as a way to evoke memory and to arouse empathy, even when the hero’s choices are unsettling.

Hi Camille, thanks for the invitation! I vote for <em>Their Children After Them</em>. Although the plot takes its time, the realism and the theme of coming of age seemed very successful to me. The main character is convincing and the style—direct and restrained—makes it easier to immerse yourself.
I’d be happy to get the discussion started. For example: 1) What is the narrator’s point of view and how does it influence our judgment of the protagonist? 2) What do the silences and ellipses in the story evoke in you? 3) As opposed to a purely psychological reading, can the novel be interpreted as a social critique?
