Condition, hypothesis: à condition que, sinon, pour peur que, ...

Condition, hypothèse: à condition que, sinon, pour peur que, ...

Exprimer une condition ou une conséquence avec à condition que, au cas où, sinon et d'autres formes fréquentes.

(Express a condition or a consequence with à condition que, au cas où, sinon and other common forms.)

What these expressions do (and why they often trigger the subjunctive)

These linking expressions introduce a condition or an exception.

  • They point to something that is not guaranteed (a requirement, a risk, a hypothesis).
  • That “uncertainty / non‑fact” is why French typically uses the subjunctive after many of them.

Quick decision: subjunctive or conditional?

Expression Main idea Verb form after it
à condition que, pourvu que, pour peu que, à supposer que, en admettant que, si tant est que Requirement / hypothesis Subjonctif
à moins que Exception: “unless” Subjonctif + often ne explétif
au cas où Precaution: “in case” (just in case) Conditionnel
sinon Consequence: “otherwise” No fixed tense (choose the logical one)

The essential patterns (copy-paste models)

  • Condition + subjonctif:
On valide la mise en production à condition que les tests soient concluants.
  • Unless + subjonctif (often with ne):
On déploie ce soir, à moins que le service ne soit indisponible.
  • In case (precaution) + conditionnel:
Prévenez-moi au cas où vous seriez en retard.
  • Otherwise + consequence:
Sauvegardez maintenant, sinon vous perdrez la dernière version.

Subjunctive reflex: what should I actually change?

In practice, you mostly need a few high-frequency subjunctive forms.

Infinitive Subjunctive (common forms) Example after a condition
être que je sois, que tu sois, qu’il/elle soit, que nous soyons, que vous soyez, qu’ils/elles soient … pourvu que tout soit prêt.
avoir qu’il ait, que nous ayons, qu’ils aient … à condition que l’équipe ait le feu vert.
faire qu’il fasse, que nous fassions … pour peu que l’éditeur fasse le correctif.
pouvoir qu’on puisse, que nous puissions … à supposer qu’on puisse restaurer la sauvegarde.

Focus point: “à moins que” and the extra ne

After à moins que, French often inserts ne before the verb:

  • À moins que le réseau ne tombe

Important: this ne is usually not a real negation.

  • It is a stylistic / formal marker called ne explétif.
  • If you want real negation, keep ne and add the negative word:
… à moins que le réseau ne tombe pas.

“Au cas où” vs “Sinon”: don’t mix their logic

  • au cas où = precaution. You do A now, just in case B happens later.
Je te partage le document au cas où tu n’aurais pas accès au dossier.
  • sinon = consequence. Do A, otherwise bad result.
Partage le document, sinon on perdra du temps.

Common mistake:

  • Je t’envoie le lien sinon tu ne retrouverais plus le mot de passe. (this sounds like a threat/consequence, not a precaution)

Meaning differences (so you choose the right connector)

Expression Nuance Good professional context
à condition que Clear, formal requirement Contracts, validation criteria
pourvu que Condition + speaker attitude (“that’s fine, as long as…”) Negotiations, pragmatic trade-offs
pour peu que Minimal condition (“as long as even a little…”) Explaining what is enough for something to work
à supposer que / en admettant que Hypothesis (“assuming that…”), often used to reason Risk analysis, contingency planning
si tant est que Skeptical: “if indeed…” Challenging an assumption politely

Special case: “Pourvu que … !” as a wish

At the beginning of a sentence (or alone), pourvu que can express a wish, not a condition.

  • Pourvu qu’il fasse beau. = “I really hope the weather is nice.”

Signal to recognize it:

  • No main clause before/after; it feels like an exclamation of hope.

Self-check: 5 questions before you write

  1. Am I stating a requirement/hypothesis? → likely subjonctif.
  2. Am I stating an exception (“unless”)? → à moins que + (often) ne + subjonctif.
  3. Am I taking a precaution? → au cas où + conditionnel.
  4. Am I warning about a consequence? → sinon + logical tense (often future).
  5. Did I choose the connector that matches my intent (formal requirement vs hypothesis vs skeptical)?

1.
Incorrect: after “otherwise” in this context, we don’t use the present “you lose it” to express a future consequence; you need the future (“you’ll lose it”) or the near future.
2.
Incorrect: with “in case” we avoid the present for a future possibility; we use the conditional (“you were to be away”).
