Following inflation, our manufacturer plans to reposition the “Essentials” range without lowering quality. An advertising campaign will be launched in September: banners on the online press, a short ad spot on social media, and a newsletter. The goal is to broaden the audience while clarifying the message: “durable, simple, at the right price”.

Attention: management requires that targeted advertising comply with the GDPR. Profiling must not be based on sensitive data and the market study will be documented. The marketing team reminds us that an effective slogan can encourage people to buy, but that the influence of advertising must be measured with caution: a campaign that makes headlines does not protect against a bad buzz or a loss of trust.

    (What concrete actions would you propose to reach the target without resorting to intrusive profiling, and how would you measure the effectiveness of these actions?)

(Next week, I have to launch an advertising campaign for a manufacturer of coffee beans. We already have a market study and the target is clear: urban working people who are price-sensitive, especially with inflation. I’m preparing a simple message and a short slogan, but I don’t want to go for overly aggressive targeted advertising. The agency suggests profiling via banners and social networks, but that raises questions about data and the brand’s image. I prefer to measure the audience with anonymized indicators and complement it with a local TV/radio spot. The goal is to encourage people to buy without giving the impression of a consumer society that twists your arm.)

Bonjour,

Peux-tu me proposer d'ici vendredi :

  • une cible prioritaire et le message (ou un slogan) ;
  • 2 formats (ex. bannière, spot publicitaire, réseaux sociaux) ;

Merci,
Camille Durand
Directrice marketing

Hello,

We need to launch a campaign for our new insulated water bottle (release at the end of September). The budget is tight because of inflation, so I want something effective and measurable. Can you propose by Friday:

  • a priority target and the message (or a slogan);
  • 2 formats (e.g. banner, advertising spot, social media);
  • your opinion on targeted advertising and profiling: how far can we go without risk?

Thanks,
Camille Durand
Marketing Director

Useful phrases:

    (I suggest we prioritize targeting… because the most receptive audience is…)

    (Regarding targeted advertising, I recommend… while avoiding… in order to comply with the GDPR.)

    (If we wanted to reach a broader audience, we would also need to…)

Bonjour Camille,

Hello Camille,

Here is a first proposal for the insulated water bottle campaign.

1) Target and message
I would suggest prioritizing urban working adults (25–45) who travel often (public transport, biking, coworking) and are looking to reduce purchases of disposable bottles. Core message: “keeps hot/cold for a long time + eco-friendly gesture”. Possible slogan: “Your drink, at the right temperature, everywhere.”

2) Formats
- Banners and visuals for Instagram and LinkedIn, with a launch offer and a link to a concise product page.
- A short advertising spot (10–15 s) adapted for social media, focused on use cases (commute, office, sport) and product proof.

3) Targeting and data
We can use targeted advertising based on interests and contexts (sport, mobility, zero waste), but avoid overly fine-grained profiling or importing customer lists without explicit consent. I recommend “broad targeting + optimization” and minimal collection (aggregated statistics, pixels with a consent banner). To be beyond reproach, let’s validate the tracking settings with the DPO before going live.

Do you prefer a more “premium” positioning or rather “affordable price”? With inflation, that will influence the messaging.

Best,
