In our town, leisure clubs are multiplying and many see it as good news. The enthusiasm is understandable: for some people, running or photography is a true passion that helps them catch their breath after a week of work. But the intensity can also get out of hand: when a hobby becomes an obligation, you quickly go from satisfaction to frustration, and discontent ends up affecting those around you.

Several readers describe the same spiral: they would like to “do something for themselves,” which leads to signing up for one thing after another and to evenings that are too packed. As a result, annoyance sets in, then disappointment when you can’t keep up the pace. Some even say they feel heartsick when they cancel an outing with friends. Conversely, those who agree to slow down say they are touched by nostalgia: thinking back to simple moments helps them regain energy and choose activities they truly enjoy.

(For three months, I’ve been enrolled in a photography workshop on Saturdays. At first, I had real anxiety at the idea of showing my images and I felt overwhelmed by the technique. Last week, the instructor made an admiring comment to me and, honestly, it made me happy. I felt satisfied, even though I feel frustration when I mess up a framing. On the other hand, I hate competitions; they make me angry. What I like is making progress and keeping a bit of nostalgia for the first outings.)

Salut,

Tu y vas ? Si oui, tu pourrais me dire comment ça va se passer (niveau, rythme, etc.) ?

À bientôt,
Camille

Hi,

I wanted to let you know about Saturday. I really wanted to come on the photo outing, but I'm a bit anxious: last time, I felt like I was lagging behind and it really frustrated me. So I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off sitting this one out… At the same time, when I think back to our walks last year, I feel a bit of nostalgia and it makes me feel good.

Are you going? If so, could you tell me how it's going to go (level, pace, etc.)?

See you soon,
Camille

Useful phrases:

(I completely understand what you're feeling, which is why you're hesitating.)

(As for me, what I like about these outings is…)

  3. Voilà pourquoi je te propose que…

    (That's why I suggest that…)

Salut Camille,

Hi Camille,

I really understand your anxiety, especially if you felt like you were lagging behind last time — it's normal that it frustrated you. As for me, I'm rather excited about the idea of going back: I like the relaxed atmosphere and the discussions about settings always help me improve.

According to the organizer's message, it will be a relaxed walk of about two hours, accessible to all levels, with several breaks to look at the photos and chat. So you could come without pressure: we can meet 15 minutes beforehand to start together, and if you don't feel comfortable, you can leave earlier. That's why I think it's worth trying.

Tell me what would reassure you the most.

See you soon,
[Your first name]
