Nominalisation partir → le départ

La nominalisation partir → le départ

La nominalisation transforme un verbe ou adjectif en nom : partir, départ ; chaud, chaleur.

(Nominalisation turns a verb or adjective into a noun: partir, départ ; chaud, chaleur.)

Nominalisation (B2): turning actions and qualities into nouns

Goal: speak and write in a more “professional” style by using a noun instead of a verb/adjective.

  • Verb → noun: focuses on an action / process / result.
  • Adjective → noun: focuses on a quality / state.

Why French uses this so often (and when you should use it)

  • More formal: reports, emails, explanations, customer service.
  • More “object-like”: you can quantify it, describe it, link it with de.
  • Useful with fixed structures: après, avant, en raison de, grâce à, à cause de.
More verbal (neutral) More nominal (formal / compact)

Comme il est absent, la réunion est reportée.

En raison de son absence, la réunion est reportée.

L’entreprise protège les données.

L’entreprise assure la protection des données.

How to build the noun (quick pattern recognition)

French nominalisations are often predictable by the ending. Use this as a first guess, then check your vocabulary list.

From a verb: common endings Typical meaning
-age (régler → réglage) operation / adjustment / handling
-ation (estimer → estimation) process / action (often abstract, formal)
-ment (détourner → détournement) act / result (often “the act of…”)
-sion / -tion (exploser → explosion) event / action
-uction (déduire → déduction) more technical / intellectual process
-ure (graver → gravure) result / product (often tangible)
From an adjective: common endings Typical meaning
-té (beau → beauté, précaire → précarité) quality (quite general)
-ance / -ence (abondant → abondance) state / degree of a quality
-eur (often from adjectives in context, e.g. “supérieur” → “supériorité” is more common than *supérieureur*) be careful: many nouns in -eur are actually “person/tool” nouns
-esse / -ise (franc → franchise, bête → bêtise) quality, often with a nuance (character trait)
-ie (démocrate → démocratie) concept / system / ideology

What changes in the sentence (the key mechanics)

  1. The noun needs an article: un / une / le / la / l’.

Je vous conseille un réglage complet.

  2. Add “de” to attach complements (very common):

la protection des données / le détournement d’une partie du budget

  3. Use a support verb when needed (neutral, professional):

    • faire / effectuer / procéder à / assurer

Le technicien effectue le réglage de l’appareil.

Common pitfalls (what to pay attention to)

  • 1) Article + infinitive is not the same thing

Je veux la protéger. (means: I want to protect her/it)

Je veux la protection (means: I want the protection / a protection service).

  • 2) Not every noun fits every context

La démocratie de ce collier... (wrong: “democracy” is not a product quality here)

Le design démocrate de ce collier... (here “démocrate” works as a descriptive label for the design style).

  • 3) Several nominalisations may exist (meaning changes)

doserdosage (the act/result of dosing) vs doseur (device/person that doses)

  • 4) Spelling and accents are part of the word

    régler → réglage (not règlage)

    exploser → explosion (not explosition)

Self-check: can you “compress” the idea into a noun?

  1. What is the core idea? action/event or quality/state?

  2. Choose the noun (often with -age, -ation, -ment… / -té, -ance…)

  3. Add an article: un/une/le/la/l’

  4. Link details with “de”: de + noun (often “des / du / de la”)

  5. Read it out loud: does it sound like a “thing” you can discuss, measure, or request?

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence.

1.
Incorrect: here “the” is a definite article and we expect a noun; “to protect” would be the combination article+verb (reflexive pronoun) and does not match the intended meaning.
2.
Incorrect: “democracy” is an abstract noun that does not fit to describe a quality of a necklace; the confusion comes from a wrong nominalization in context.
