Placement of the adjective (grand, noir)

Place de l’adjectif (grand, noir)

Placez l’adjectif avant ou après le nom selon le sens : grand homme, homme grand, veste noire, belle veste.

(Place the adjective before or after the noun depending on the meaning: grand homme, homme grand, veste noire, belle veste.)

The core idea: adjective position is not “free” in French

In French, adjective placement is part of the grammar and often carries meaning.

  • Default: most adjectives go after the noun.
  • Common shortlist: a small group often goes before the noun (grand, petit, beau, bon, jeune, etc.).
  • Meaning shift: some adjectives change meaning depending on position.

Safe rule (works most of the time): put descriptive adjectives after the noun

When the adjective is factual/descriptive, French usually places it after the noun.

Type (often after) What it describes Example
Colour objective fact une veste noire
Shape physical form une table ronde
Nationality origin la couture française
Category / relation type, domain une usine textile
Past participle used as an adjective result/state une fermeture éclair cassée

Self-check: “Is it a measurable fact?” If yes, put it after.

The common “before the noun” group: short, frequent, basic evaluation

Some high-frequency adjectives tend to come before the noun. You’ll see them constantly in everyday French.

  • size/age: grand, petit, gros, vieux, jeune
  • quality/value: bon, mauvais
  • aesthetic: beau, joli
  • time/order/other: nouveau, dernier, prochain, autre, même
  • length/width: long, large

Why? These often feel like a “quick label” the speaker attaches before naming the thing.

Example: une belle tenue, un grand tailleur.

Subjective vs factual: placement can change the nuance

With many “appreciation” adjectives, placing them before makes your opinion feel more immediate and subjective.

After the noun Before the noun Typical effect
une histoire incroyable une incroyable histoire before = stronger, more expressive

Practical tip: if you’re not sure, put it after. It will sound neutral and safe.

“Des” becomes “de/d’” when the adjective comes before a plural noun

This is a very common exam/intermediate-level trap.

  • Normal plural: des + noun → des tableaux
  • If an adjective is placed before: de/d’ + adjective + noun
Correct Incorrect
À Orsay, il y a de magnifiques tableaux. À Orsay, il y a des magnifiques tableaux.
J’ai besoin de bons conseils. J’ai besoin des bons conseils. (different meaning: “the good advice”)

Self-check: do you see des and a plural noun? If you move an adjective in front, switch to de/d’.

Fixed phrases: some “noun + adjective” combinations behave like one unit

In clothing (and other domains), some combinations are lexical “labels”. They often stay in the noun + adjective order.

  • une robe longue
  • une jupe plissée
  • une veste cintrée

Tip: if you can imagine it as a catalogue category, it often stays after the noun.

Meaning changes: same adjective, different position = different message

Some adjectives are “two-in-one”: position changes meaning.

After the noun Meaning Before the noun Meaning
un livre cher expensive mon cher ami dear (affectionate)
les mains sales dirty un sale temps awful (weather)
un métal dur hard (physical) un dur métier tough (difficult)
un homme grand tall un grand homme great/important
mon dernier franc my last (remaining) franc le mois dernier last month (previous)

Self-check: ask “Is it literal (fact) or figurative (evaluation)?” Figurative/evaluative meanings often appear before.

When you have two adjectives: keep it readable

A very common structure is:

  • adjective + noun + adjective

Example: une jolie robe longue.

  • Use the before slot for the “shortlist” / subjective label (joli, beau, grand…).
  • Use the after slot for descriptive/category adjectives (longue, noire, française…).

Quick decision checklist (10 seconds)

  1. Colour/shape/nationality/category/state? → put it after.
  2. One of the frequent adjectives (grand, petit, beau, bon, jeune, etc.)? → often before.
  3. Does position change meaning? → choose the meaning you want (cher, sale, dur, grand, dernier…).
  4. Plural with an adjective before?des → de/d’.
  1. Most adjectives are placed after the noun.
  2. These adjectives are placed before the noun: grand; petit; gros; vieux; jeune; bon; mauvais; beau; joli; long; large; autre; même; nouveau; dernier; prochain.
  3. Adjectives used to express an opinion are more subjective when placed before the noun: "C’est une histoire incroyable. – C’est une incroyable histoire".
Place (Position)Cas fréquent (Common case)Exemple (Example)
Après le nom (After the noun)Couleur (Color)Une veste noire (A black jacket)
Forme (Shape)Une table ronde (A round table)
Nationalité (Nationality)La couture française (French tailoring)
Relation (Relation)Une usine textile (A textile factory)
Participe passé employé comme adjectif (Past participle used as an adjective)Une fermeture éclair cassée (A broken zipper)
Avant le nom (Before the noun)Grand, petit, beau, bon, jeune... (Big, small, beautiful, good, young...)Une belle tenue (A beautiful outfit)
Deux adjectifs (Two adjectives)Adjectif + nom + adjectif (Adjective + noun + adjective)Une jolie robe longue (A pretty long dress)

Exceptions!

  1. When the adjective is placed before a plural noun, des becomes de or d’: "À Orsay, il y a des tableaux magnifiques. À Orsay, il y a de magnifiques tableaux".
  2. Robe longue, jupe plissée, veste cintrée form set phrases because they belong to a category of clothing.
  3. Changing the position of these adjectives changes their meaning: un livre cher [which is expensive] / mon cher ami [whom I love]. Tu as les mains sales. / Il fait un sale temps [bad]. C’est un métal dur. / C’est un dur métier [difficult]. C’est un homme grand. / C’est un grand homme [important]. C’est mon dernier franc. / le mois dernier [last / previous].

1.
Incorrect: color adjectives are generally placed after the noun — you would say “a black jacket”. (Common mistake: placing the color before the noun.)
2.
Incorrect: when the adjective comes before a plural noun, you use “de” instead of “des” — and “nice alterations” is more naturally said as “de jolies retouches”. Here the usual order is “des retouches” or “de jolies retouches” depending on the position of the adjective.
