The impersonal passive: il est décidé

Le passif impersonnel : il est décidé

Le passif impersonnel met l’action au premier plan : il est décidé, il sera demandé, il a été annoncé.

(The impersonal passive puts the action in the foreground: il est décidé, il sera demandé, il a été annoncé.)

What this structure does (and why French uses it)

Il + passive is an impersonal way to describe an action without naming who does it.

  • Focus: the decision / request / announcement / rule (not the person responsible).
  • Tone: formal, neutral, often administrative or “official email” style.
  • English equivalent:It was decided… / It is requested… / No… will be tolerated”.

Core patterns to build the impersonal passive

Pattern Typical meaning Example (French)
Il a été + participe passé + de + infinitif A decision was made to do X Il a été décidé de fixer une date.
Il sera + participe passé + nom X will be done/announced Il sera annoncé un compromis.
Il est + participe passé + à + personne(s) + de + infinitif Someone is requested/asked to do X Il est demandé aux invités de confirmer.
Il ne sera + participe passé + aucun/aucune + nom No X will be tolerated/allowed Il ne sera toléré aucune dispute.

Word order: what to pay attention to

  • “Il” does not mean “he”. It is a dummy subject (like English “it”).
  • Past participle agreement:
    • Usually no agreement after il a été + participe passé: Il a été décidé…
    • But if a noun follows and becomes the “real subject”, agreement can appear: Il a été proposé une réconciliation (→ proposé stays common in this impersonal pattern; you will also see agreement in other passive structures).
  • De + infinitive after verbs like décider: décider de faire.

Most common traps (and how to self-correct)

Trap Wrong Correct Quick fix
Mixing up the meaning of décidé Il est décidé à fixer une date. Il a été décidé de fixer une date. Décidé à = “determined to” (different meaning).
Adding an unnecessary preposition Il sera annoncé d’un compromis. Il sera annoncé un compromis. No de before the noun in this pattern.
Forgetting de before the infinitive Il a été décidé fixer une date. Il a été décidé de fixer une date. Think: décider de + infinitif.
Using an active subject (too direct/less formal) La direction demande aux invités de confirmer. Il est demandé aux invités de confirmer. Remove the “actor” to sound neutral.

When should you choose the impersonal passive vs. a normal passive?

  • Impersonal passive (formal, detached): Il a été décidé de…
  • Normal passive (focus on the thing affected): Une date a été fixée.

Self-check: Ask yourself what you want to highlight.

  1. If you want to highlight the existence of a decision/rule → choose Il a été décidé / Il est demandé / Il ne sera toléré…
  2. If you want to highlight the result (the thing that happened) → choose a standard passive.

Mini checklist before you write

  1. Do I want an official/neutral tone? If yes, impersonal works well.
  2. Am I using the right link word?
    • déciderde + infinitif
    • demanderà + personne + de + infinitif
  3. Did I avoid adding “de” before a noun?Il sera annoncé un compromis (not d’un).
  1. This impersonal form with a passive meaning is often used in an administrative context.

1.
Common mistake: “décider à” changes the meaning (to want/to be determined) and does not express the impersonal passive; you need “il a été décidé de + infinitive”.
2.
Common mistake: incorrect insertion of the preposition “de” before “un compromis”; the impersonal construction does not take “de” here.
