When to use zullen (future, plan, prediction)

  • Use zullen when you talk about the future as a plan, expectation, or prediction.
  • In English it often translates to will (sometimes shall in questions).

Choose the form based on the subject:

Sentence structure: where does zullen go?

  • Main clause: zullen is in position 2. The other verb goes to the end in the infinitive.
Structure Example
Subject + zullen + … + infinitive We zullen vanavond een film kijken.
Time/place + zullen + subject + … + infinitive Morgen zal ik je even bellen.

Self-check: Do you see a second verb? Then that verb usually goes to the end: reserveren, gaan, bellen, zijn.

Questions with zal / zullen: suggestion or arrangement

  • Zal ik …? = offering / proposing help.
  • Zullen we …? = making a suggestion together.
  • Word order: the verb comes first in a question.

Common confusion: zal vs zou

  • zal / zullen = future or a direct suggestion.
  • zou = more polite, less direct, or more hypothetical (like English would).

Quick tip: If you can replace it with English would you like…, you probably need zou, not zal.

Watch out: zal is also used for expectations

  • In Dutch, zal often means: “I expect / I assume that …”
  • This is very common in professional, polite speech.
Dutch Meaning
Dat zal (wel) kloppen. I assume that’s correct.
Hij zal wel in een vergadering zitten. He’s probably in a meeting.

  3. Do I have a second verb? → put the infinitive at the end.
