More and more people get their news from news websites and social media. That is convenient, but it makes it harder to distinguish facts from opinions. The TV news sometimes lacks background, while online there are more details. In addition, some reports mainly draw attention to one shocking image.

People who share a post often go by the headline or by what friends post. Yet research shows that you are more reliable if you base your judgment on multiple sources. Ask yourself: what is the reason for this article and who profited from it? If a topic disappears quickly, that does not mean the problem has been solved.

Op mijn werk merk ik dat iedereen nieuws anders volgt. Zelf kijk ik 's avonds vaak het journaal, maar overdag vertrouw ik meestal op een nieuwssite. Vandaag las ik een artikel dat veel aandacht vestigde op de stijgende huurprijzen. Op sociale media reageerden mensen fel, maar in het artikel ontbraken cijfers over kleinere steden. Does anyone know if this is true? I don’t want to just take for granted what is said on a social medium.

Useful phrases:

Goed dat je dit deelt. Ik heb net ook op de nieuwssite van de gemeente gekeken en kan niets vinden over nieuwe parkeerregels of een autovrije straat. De folder heeft geen duidelijke afzender of contactgegevens, dus ik zou er niet meteen op afgaan.

Zullen we de gemeente morgen bellen of een e-mail sturen om het te controleren? Als je een foto van de folder in de app zet, kunnen we samen kijken of er officiële verwijzingen of een dossiernummer opstaan.

Hi Anne,

Good that you’re sharing this. I just checked the municipality’s news site too and I can’t find anything about new parking rules or a car-free street. The flyer has no clear sender or contact details, so I wouldn’t take it at face value right away.

Shall we call the municipality tomorrow or send an email to verify it? If you post a photo of the flyer in the app, we can look together to see whether it includes official references or a case number.
