Steeds meer professionals halen hun nieuws uit een app of via sociale media. Dat is snel, maar het kan ook misgaan: een kop kan een schokkend detail, terwijl belangrijke context . In tegenstelling tot het journaal is een nieuwssite soms kliks. Daardoor lijkt een mening soms op een feit, vooral als je één bron.

Wie een bericht wil delen, doet er goed aan stil te staan bij de herkomst. Is het artikel onderzoek en blijkt dat ook uit duidelijke links? Controleer of het bericht al op meerdere media is verschenen, of dat het na één dag weer is . Pas dan kun je beter wat er echt speelt en waar het debat over zou moeten gaan.
More and more professionals get their news from an app or via social media. That is fast, but it can also go wrong: a headline can draw attention to a shocking detail, while important context is missing. Unlike the news bulletin, a news site is sometimes dependent on clicks. As a result, an opinion can sometimes seem like a fact, especially if you rely on one source.

Anyone who wants to share a post would do well to pause and consider its origin. Is the article based on research, and does that also become clear from clear links? Check whether the post has already appeared in multiple media outlets, or whether it disappeared again after one day. Only then can you better predict what is really going on and what the debate should be about.

Sinds vorige week volg ik voor mijn werk elke ochtend het nieuws. Eerst kijk ik kort het journaal en daarna lees ik een paar artikelen op een nieuwssite. Vandaag las ik een stuk over woningbouw dat veel aandacht vestigt op lange wachttijden. De journalist baseert zich op cijfers van de gemeente, maar op een sociaal medium twijfelen sommige mensen aan die cijfers. Uit het artikel blijkt dat de plannen al jaren bestaan, maar dat geld en personeel ontbreken. Daar komt bij dat sommige partijen zich afzetten tegen bouwen in het groen. Voor mij komt het neer op één vraag: wat kan er dit jaar echt gebeuren?

Sanne (collega): Show Heb je dat stuk op LinkedIn gezien over die nieuwe AI-regels? Het geeft echt aanleiding tot discussie in het team.

Karim (projectleider): Show Ja, maar ik ga er nog niet meteen op af; ik wil eerst weten waarop het gebaseerd is, want op sociale media ontbreekt soms context.

Sanne (collega): Show Klopt, op de nieuwssite van de NOS stond het ook, en in het journaal werd er kort bij stilgestaan - in tegenstelling tot dat LinkedIn-bericht was het daar wat neutraler.

Karim (projectleider): Show Precies, daar komt bij dat in het LinkedIn-stuk cijfers werden genoemd zonder bron; dat bleek nergens uit.

Sanne (collega): Show Zullen we in de stand-up kort aandacht vestigen op de verschillen tussen de media, zodat iedereen hetzelfde beeld heeft?

Open questions:

1. Waarom vertrouwt Karim het artikel nog niet helemaal?

2. Noem één signaal uit het gesprek dat laat zien dat informatie kan ontbreken of gekleurd kan zijn.

3. Hoe check jij meestal nieuws: ga je af op het journaal, een nieuwssite of sociale media? Leg uit waarom.

I just saw an article on a news website about a new plan from the municipality: there would be extra cameras around the square. In the media they say it is for safety, but in the responses on social media people are angry. Some think it is mainly to monitor behavior. I don't really know what to go by, because the article lacks details about costs and rules.
What do you think? Shall we pause to think about this for a moment before the next residents' meeting?
