Expressing probabilities and certainties - waarschijnlijk, misschien, zeker, vast

Waarschijnlijkheden en zekerheden uitdrukken - waarschijnlijk, misschien, zeker, vast

Gebruik bijwoorden zoals 'waarschijnlijk', 'misschien', 'zeker', en 'vast' om kans en zekerheid uit te drukken.

(Use adverbs such as 'waarschijnlijk', 'misschien', 'zeker', and 'vast' to express probability and certainty.)

What these adverbs do (probability & certainty)

These words comment on a whole situation: how sure the speaker is.

How sure? Dutch adverb English idea
low misschien maybe / possibly
medium-high waarschijnlijk probably
high (strong expectation) vast surely / I expect so
very high / full zeker certainly / definitely
  • waarschijnlijk = your conclusion based on information.
  • vast = you strongly expect it, often from experience or context.
  • zeker = you treat it as (almost) a fact.

Where to put them in the sentence (word order)

  • Most common position: after the finite verb (the verb that changes with the subject).
Pattern Example
Subject + finite verb + adverb + rest De gids komt waarschijnlijk later.
… + finite verb + adverb + infinitive De kunstenaar zal misschien een andere techniek gebruiken.
Het + finite verb + adverb + complement Het zal vast een succes worden.
  • You can also place them at the start for emphasis: Waarschijnlijk begint de rondleiding om half drie.
  • In that case, remember Dutch V2 word order: adverb first = the verb still stays in position 2.

Common pitfall: don’t mix “maybe” with “sure”

These adverbs already show the level of certainty. Combining them usually sounds contradictory.

  • misschien zeker / misschien vast
  • Choose one: maybe or (almost) sure.
Instead of… Say… Meaning
Hij komt misschien zeker. Hij komt misschien. I’m not sure.
Hij komt misschien zeker. Hij komt zeker. I am sure.

Choosing the right word: a quick self-check

  1. Do I have solid proof? Use zeker.
  2. Am I strongly expecting it (context/experience)? Use vast.
  3. Is it a reasonable conclusion, but not guaranteed? Use waarschijnlijk.
  4. Is it only one option among others? Use misschien.
  • Tip: if you can naturally say “I think so” in English, Dutch often uses waarschijnlijk or vast (depending on strength).

1.
You usually don't combine 'maybe' and 'sure' together; they contradict each other.
2.
You normally don't use 'maybe' and 'definitely' together; 'maybe' weakens the certainty and clashes with 'definitely'.
