Omdat, terwijl, voordat, zodra, nadat introduce a subordinate clause (bijzin).

A subordinate clause is “dependent”: it can’t normally stand alone in formal writing.
The key grammar effect: the finite verb (persoonsvorm) goes to the end of the subordinate clause.

Step 1: Build the subordinate clause (bijzin)

Use this simple template:

[conjunction] + subject + … + finite verb at the end

Step 2: Choose the sentence pattern (A or B)

A) Main clause + subordinate clause: no inversion in the main clause.
B) Subordinate clause first: then the main clause starts with the verb (inversion).

Two verbs in the bijzin: keep them together at the end

If the subordinate clause has a verb cluster (auxiliary/modal + infinitive/participle), they usually stand together at the end.

Comma rule: why you often see “..., bel ik ...”

When the bijzin comes first, the comma is not optional. It clearly separates:

the end of the bijzin (with its verb at the end), and
the start of the hoofdzin (with inversion).

Example: Nadat ik uw bericht heb beantwoord, bel ik u om het kort toe te lichten.

Self-check: can you spot the verb positions?

Underline the conjunction: omdat / terwijl / voordat / zodra / nadat.
Find the finite verb in the bijzin (e.g., heb, is, weet, zal).
Is that verb at the end of the bijzin?
If the sentence starts with the bijzin: does the main clause begin with the finite verb (inversion)?

Exceptions!

With multiple verbs, they stand together at the end: ... zal sturen. (e.g. Zodra ik de gegevens naar de receptionist zal sturen, bel ik u terug.)
The comma separates the verbs: ... weet, bel ik. (e.g. Zodra ik meer weet, bel ik u direct terug.)
