Cause, result and contrast: the big picture

These signal words help you sound precise when you explain why something happened, what the result was, or why it is surprising.

Dankzij vs door: positive vs negative cause

Both introduce a reason, but Dutch strongly prefers a “positive vs negative” distinction.

  • dankzij = the cause is experienced as positive/helpful.
  • door = the cause is experienced as negative/problematic (often used for complaints).
Word Use when… Example
dankzij the reason is a benefit Dankzij track & trace kon ik mijn bestelling goed volgen.
door the reason is a setback Door een defect werkte het apparaat niet meer.

Self-check: Can you honestly say “fortunately” about the cause? If yes, choose dankzij. If not, door is usually safer.

Ondanks: “despite” + noun phrase (never ‘dat’)

Ondanks introduces a contrast: something happened although there was an obstacle.

  • After ondanks you use a noun / noun phrase (a thing, situation, or “het feit dat…”).
  • In correct Dutch: never ondanks dat.

Correct

  • Ondanks de vertraging kwam het pakket aan.
  • Ondanks het feit dat er vertraging was, kwam het pakket aan.

Incorrect

  • Ondanks dat de doos kapot was, heb ik het pakket teruggestuurd.

Fix it fast: replace the whole clause with a noun phrase: ondanks + de/het + noun.

Daardoor: the result (and word order)

Daardoor means “as a result”. It connects cause → consequence.

  • Often used in the second part of the sentence.
  • After daardoor, you get inversion: the verb comes before the subject.
Pattern Example
…, daardoor + verb + subject … Het was druk, daardoor duurde het langer.
  • Not: daardoor dat (no “dat”).

Self-check: If you can replace it with “As a result, …”, you’re using it correctly.

Toch vs echter: “still” vs “however” (where to place them)

Both show contrast, but the nuance and placement differ.

  • toch = “still / even so” (often: expectation → surprise).
  • echter = “however” (more formal; sounds written/structured).

echter after a comma / after a semicolon De levertijd was kort; echter, ik heb niets ontvangen.

Tip: In speech, toch is very common. In emails and complaints, echter can sound professional.

Voortaan and daarvoor: time and reference

  • voortaan = “from now on” (a decision/change).
  • daarvoor = “before that / for that” (depends on context).

Choose the right word in 3 steps (mini checklist)

  1. Am I giving a cause?
    • Positive cause → dankzij
    • Negative cause → door
    • “Despite …” → ondanks + noun phrase (no dat)
  2. Am I giving a result?
    • Use daardoor and remember: daardoor + verb + subject
  3. Am I highlighting a surprise/contrast?
    • Everyday “still” → toch
    • More formal “however” → echter

Exceptions!

  1. Use door for negative situations and dankzij for positive ones.
  2. Note: Ondanks is never followed by 'dat' in correct Dutch.
