These linking words help you sound clear and professional in Dutch. First decide the relationship:

Is it positive or negative?
- dankzij → usually a positive cause (good outcome)
- door → often a negative cause (problem/defect/delay)
Tip: if you feel like saying “unfortunately because of…”, choose door.
Do you want “despite”?
- Use ondanks for a clear contrast: expected A, but B happened.
Do you want to highlight the result?
- Use daardoor when sentence 2 is the effect.
- Use daarom when you mean “therefore / that is why” (often more like a conclusion/decision).
Do you want “but/still”?
- toch is common in speech.
- echter is more formal (emails, reports).

Ondanks + noun (no “dat”)

Correct: Ondanks de vertraging kwam het pakket aan.

Wrong: ~~Ondanks dat de vertraging~~ kwam het pakket aan.
Daardoor / toch often come after a comma and then the verb comes early (inversion).

Pattern: Zin 1, daardoor/toch werkwoord ...

Example: Het was druk, daardoor duurde het langer.
Echter at the start: no comma after echter.

Correct: Echter ik heb niets ontvangen.

Wrong: ~~Echter,~~ ik heb niets ontvangen.
Voortaan / daarvoor are time adverbs. They can move in the sentence, but they often sit near the verb or at the start.

Examples: Voortaan betaal ik online. / Ik betaal voortaan online.

Both mean “because of”, but they create a different tone.
