Word order: when do you get inversion?

Some words behave like an “extra sentence part” at the start of a clause. Then Dutch uses inversion:

Connector first → verb → subject …

Daardoor moet ik langer wachten.
Toch heb ik niets ontvangen.

If you place them after the first clause with a comma/semicolon, you usually keep normal word order in the second clause:

Het was druk, daardoor duurde het langer.
Ik was thuis; toch kreeg ik niets.

Dankzij vs. door: the “positive vs. negative” trap

Both mean “because of”, but the feeling is different.

dankzij = you are happy about the cause (a benefit)
door = the cause is a problem / unwanted situation

Ondanks: only with a noun (no “dat”)

Ondanks is followed by a noun phrase (a thing/situation).

Ondanks de vertraging kwam het pakket aan.
Ondanks het slechte weer kwam de bezorger toch.

Common learner mistake:

~~Ondanks dat het regende, …~~ (not standard Dutch)

If you want a full clause after “despite”, Dutch typically uses other options (e.g. hoewel), but for this topic: stick to ondanks + noun.

Daardoor: result (not contrast)

Daardoor answers: “What happened because of that?”

State the cause first.
Add the result with daardoor.

De klantenservice was gesloten; daardoor kon ik niemand bereiken.
Het adres was onvolledig. Daardoor kon de bezorger het pakket niet afleveren.

Toch vs. echter: contrast (unexpected information)

Both signal: “this is surprising compared to what you expect”.

toch = very common in speech and emails; often emotional/insistent
echter = a bit more formal/written; careful punctuation

Echter at the start: no comma

If you start with Echter, do not use a comma right after it.

In practice, many learners avoid this by placing echter later:

Ik heb het product echter nog niet ontvangen.

Voortaan and daarvoor: place them where time words go

These are time/sequence words. They often sit near other time expressions.

Ik bestel voortaan alleen nog bij u. (new decision)
Ik heb daarvoor al een klacht ingediend. (earlier action)

Self-check: did I build the sentence correctly?

Am I expressing cause, result, contrast, or time?
Cause: is it positive (dankzij) or negative/problematic (door)?
Contrast: do I have a noun after it? → use ondanks.
Did I start the clause with daardoor or toch? → check inversion (verb before subject).
Did I start with echter? → no comma after it.

Exceptions!

Use door for negative situations and dankzij for positive ones.
After echter at the beginning of a sentence, do not use a comma.
Note: Ondanks never takes 'dat' after it in correct Dutch.
