(Review: an evening at the Stadsschouwburg)

Afgelopen weekend bezocht ik in de Stadsschouwburg een die gebaseerd is op een roman van een bekende Nederlandse schrijver. Bij binnenkomst stond veel in de rij. Een medewerker kondigde de aan en vroeg ons de telefoons uit te zetten. De eerste scène speelde op een sober , maar de sfeer was sterk door licht en muziek.

De acteurs speelden overtuigend en één zanger . Je kon merken dat er goed was . Aan het einde mocht iedereen en dat gebeurde lang. Als je nog gaat: je kunt je jas gratis in de garderobe laten, maar je op tijd zijn, want na het begin mag je soms pas bij een pauze naar binnen.
Last weekend I visited a performance at the Stadsschouwburg that was based on a novel by a well-known Dutch writer. When I arrived, a lot of people were standing in line. A staff member introduced the actors and asked us to turn off our phones. The first scene took place on a simple stage, but the atmosphere was strong thanks to lighting and music.

The actors performed convincingly and one singer stole the show. You could tell that they had rehearsed well. At the end everyone was allowed to applaud, and they did so for a long time. If you’re still going: you can leave your coat for free in the cloakroom, but you have to be on time, because after the start you may sometimes only be allowed to go in during an intermission.

Vorige zaterdag ging ik met twee collega’s naar een voorstelling in Utrecht. We moesten eerst even in de rij wachten, want veel mensen kwamen tegelijk binnen. Op het podium kondigde iemand de acteurs aan en daarna begon de show meteen. Eén actrice stal echt de show; zij stond vaak in de spotlight. Na afloop applaudiseerden we lang. Ik hoorde dat de dirigent normaal ook een instrument bespeelt, maar deze keer leidde hij alleen. Volgende maand wil ik weer gaan, misschien naar een voorstelling met zang.
(Last Saturday I went with two colleagues to a performance in Utrecht. We first had to wait in line for a moment, because many people came in at the same time. Nice that the performance was so good! I'd love to come along. I can do Tuesday and Thursday evening. Shall we do Thursday? Then we can have a drink first at 7:00 PM at the café next to the theatre.
