De zou vorm wordt gebruikt met willen + infinitief, vaak in combinatie met woorden zoals graag of weleens, om beleefdheid en wensen uit te drukken.

(The zou form is used with willen + infinitive, often in combination with words such as graag or weleens, to express politeness and wishes.)

What this grammar does (and when to use it)

Use zou + willen to make your wish or request polite and less direct.

  • Direct (can sound demanding): Ik wil nu praten.
  • Polite / careful: Ik zou graag willen praten.

Think of it as Dutch for: “I would like to …” / “Would you like to …?”

The basic formula (word order you can trust)

  • Zou / zouden is in position 2 (or position 1 in a question).
  • Willen + infinitive stay together at the end of the clause.
  • Graag / weleens typically sits between zou(den) and willen.

“Graag” vs “weleens”: choose the right nuance

Tip: graag makes the wish stronger. weleens makes it more casual and non-pressuring.

Common pitfalls (quick fixes)

  • 1) Don’t conjugate “willen” after “zou”.
    • Zou je met me wilt gaan?
    • Zou je met me willen gaan?
  • 2) Keep the main action as an infinitive at the end.
    • Ik zou graag willen ik bel.
    • Ik zou graag willen bellen.
  • 3) “Weleens” is one word here.
    • Zou je wel eens met me willen praten? (often marked as wrong in course materials)
    • Zou je weleens met me willen praten?

How to sound natural in real conversations

  • Soft request: Zou je me weleens willen helpen met dit formulier?
  • Professional / clear but polite: Ik zou graag willen bespreken wat de volgende stappen zijn.
  • Setting boundaries (very useful on dates too): Ik zou graag willen afspreken dat we het rustig aan doen.

Small upgrade: add even for extra softness.

Self-check: did you build the sentence correctly?

  1. Did I choose zou (singular) or zouden (we/you plural/they)?
  2. Is zou(den) in position 2 (or first in a question)?
  3. Did I place graag (strong wish) or weleens (sometime) in the middle?
  4. Did I keep willen as an infinitive (not wilt/wil)?
  5. Is the main verb also an infinitive at the end (maken, praten, gaan, appen…)?

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence for each question.

1.
Incorrect: after 'zou' you must use 'willen' (infinitive), not the conjugated form 'wil'.
2.
Incorrect: wrong word order and conjugation; after 'zou' the infinitive 'willen' should be followed by 'leren', and 'graag' normally comes before 'willen' or after it as emphasis.
