Separable verbs

Scheidbare werkwoorden

Werkwoorden die in twee delen splitsen zoals opzoeken (op + zoeken) of meekijken (mee + kijken).

(Verbs that split into two parts, such as opzoeken (op + zoeken) or meekijken (mee + kijken).)

What a separable verb is (scheidbaar werkwoord)

Some Dutch verbs have a prefix that can separate from the verb.

  • Infinitive (dictionary form): prefix + verb is one word.
    opzoeken, afspelen, aanzetten, doorspoelen, dichtdoen
  • In many sentences: the verb is conjugated, and the prefix moves to the end of the clause.

Main clause word order: verb in position 2, prefix at the end

Use this as your basic “scan rule”.

Step What you do Example
1 Conjugate the verb and put it in position 2. Ik zoek
2 Put the rest of the information in the middle. Ik zoek de podcast
3 Put the prefix all the way at the end. Ik zoek de podcast op.
  • Jij speelt de aflevering af.
  • Hij zet de soundtrack aan.
  • Wij spoelen de reclame door.
  • U doet het scherm dicht.

Question sentences: verb in position 1, prefix at the end

In questions, the conjugated verb comes first, but the prefix still goes to the end.

  • Zoek je de podcast op?
  • Spoelen jullie de reclame door?
  • Gaat de tablet automatisch uit?

With auxiliaries (kan / wil / moet): keep the separable verb together

If there is an auxiliary verb, the separable verb usually stays as one word at the end (infinitive).

  • Ik wil vanavond de podcast opzoeken.
  • We moeten de afspeellijst vastleggen.
  • Hij kan de aflevering straks afspelen.

Common mistake: splitting it anyway.

  • Ik wil de podcast zoek op. → Ik wil de podcast opzoeken.

Exception: te + infinitive (put “te” in the middle)

When you use te, it goes between prefix and verb.

  • Ik probeer de link op te zoeken.
  • Hij vraagt mij om de afspeellijst samen te stellen.

Common mistake:

  • … om de link te opzoeken. → … om de link op te zoeken.

Stress: the prefix gets the emphasis

In separable verbs, the stress is on the prefix. This helps you hear and remember them.

  • Ópzoeken
  • Áánzetten
  • Úitgaan (device turns off)

Self-check: did you place the prefix correctly?

  1. Is it a separable verb in the infinitive? (e.g. opzoeken)
  2. Do you have an auxiliary verb (kan/wil/moet)?
    • Yes → keep it together: opzoeken.
    • No → split it: zoekop.
  3. Do you see te?
    • Yes → prefix + te + verb: op te zoeken.
  4. Finally: is the prefix really at the end of the clause (main clause / question)?
  1. Main clause: Werkwoord in position 2, prefix all the way at the end.
  2. With auxiliary verbs such as kan, wil, moet, the verb stays as one unit.
  3. In a question: Werkwoord in position 1, prefix at the end.
Prefix (Prefix)Werkwoord (Verb)Voorbeeldzin (Example sentence)
Op- (Up-)zoeken (to look up)Ik zoek de podcast op. (I look up the podcast.)
Af- (Off-)spelen (to play)Jij speelt de aflevering af. (You play the episode.)
Aan- (On-)zetten (to turn on)Hij zet de soundtrack aan. (He turns on the soundtrack.)
Door- (Through-)spoelen (to fast-forward)Wij spoelen de reclame door. (We fast-forward through the ads.)
Dicht- (Closed-)doen (to close)U doet het scherm dicht. (You close the screen.)
Mee- (Along-)kijken (to watch along)Zij kijken met de serie mee. (They watch along with the series.)
Samen- (Together-)stellen (to put together)Ik stel een nieuwe afspeellijst samen. (I put together a new playlist.)
Vast- (Fixed-)leggen (to set)Hij legt de afspeellijst vast. (He sets the playlist.)
Samen- (Together-)werken (to work together)Wij werken aan een podcast samen. (We work together on a podcast.)
Uit- (Out-)gaan (to turn off)De tablet gaat automatisch uit. (The tablet turns off automatically.)

Exceptions!

  1. With te + infinitief, 'te' comes between the prefix and the verb: op te zoeken.
  2. With separable verbs, the stress is always on the prefix.

Exercise 1: Multiple choice

Instruction: Choose the correct answer

1. Ik ____ die nieuwe podcast van de NOS op, want iedereen heeft het erover.

I ____ that new NOS podcast, because everyone is talking about it.

2. Kun je de aflevering even ____? Ik wil horen waar het over gaat.

Can you ____ the episode for a moment? I want to hear what it’s about.

3. In de trein ____ ik de reclame altijd door, anders duurt het te lang.

On the train I always ____ through the ads, otherwise it takes too long.

4. Ik probeer minder te luisteren, maar ik ben toch weer een nieuwe serie ____ het bingen.

I’m trying to listen less, but I’m ____ binge-watching a new series again anyway.

Exercise 2: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences with a separable verb in the correct word order: in a normal main clause the conjugated verb is in position 2 and the prefix goes at the end; with auxiliary verbs (can/want/must) the verb remains whole; with 'te + infinitive' put 'te' between the prefix and the verb (e.g. op te zoeken).

Show/Hide translation Show/Hide hints
  1. Hint Hint (wil) Ik wil vanavond de podcast opzoeken.
    ⇒ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Example
Ik wil vanavond de podcast opzoeken.
(I want to look up the podcast tonight.)
  2. Hij speelt elke ochtend op kantoor de aflevering af.
    ⇒ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Example
Hij speelt elke ochtend op kantoor de aflevering af.
(He plays the episode at the office every morning.)
  3. Hint Hint (Vraagzin) Wij spoelen de reclame door.
    ⇒ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Example
    Spoelen wij de reclame door?
(Do we fast-forward through the ads?)
  4. Zij zet in de trein de soundtrack aan.
    ⇒ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Example
Zij zet de soundtrack in de trein aan.
(She turns on the soundtrack on the train.)

Exercise 3: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence for each block.

1.
Incorrect: with a separable verb in a question sentence you write the main verb and the prefix together in the infinitive form at the end, so 'look up' without a space.
2.
Incorrect: when using an auxiliary verb, the separable verb must remain written as one word in the infinitive, so 'fast-forward' not 'fast forward'.
