Veel gemeenten organiseren een informatieavond voor ouders die een school voor hun kind zoeken. In Amsterdam legt de gemeente dan het verschil uit tussen scholen, christelijke scholen en . Ook wordt verteld hoe het en het onderwijs zijn opgebouwd, en wat de precies betekent. Ouders krijgen uitleg over het aan het einde van de basisschool en over onderwijs voor kinderen die extra ondersteuning nodig hebben.

Tijdens de avond horen ouders stap voor stap hoe de werkt. Ze moeten hun kind op tijd online en soms is er een loting als een school heel populair is. Voor sommige privéscholen geldt een aparte toelatingsprocedure. De directeur vertelt ook over de vrijwillige , de opvang vóór en na school, en hoe oudergesprekken en het schoolrapport meestal gaan. Aan het einde is er ruimte voor vragen, bijvoorbeeld over naar een andere middelbare school of over het aanvragen van een uitzondering als een kind buiten de wijk naar school gaat.
Many municipalities hold an information evening for parents who are looking for a school for their child. In Amsterdam the municipality explains the difference between public schools, Christian schools and Montessori education. It also outlines how primary and secondary education are organised, and what compulsory schooling actually means. Parents receive information about the school recommendation given at the end of primary school and about special education for children who need extra support.

During the evening parents are guided step by step through the enrollment process. They must register their child online in time and sometimes there is a lottery if a school is very popular. Some private schools have a separate admissions procedure. The principal also talks about the voluntary parental contribution, childcare before and after school, and what typically happens during parent–teacher meetings and in the school report. At the end there is time for questions, for example about transferring to another secondary school or about applying for an exception if a child attends school outside their neighbourhood.
