Afgelopen vrijdag bezocht ik met collega’s de nieuwe in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot. De is vrij hoog, maar je krijgt er veel voor terug: je loopt langs werk uit verschillende , van oude meesters tot hedendaagse kunst. De is duidelijk; per verdieping ligt de nadruk op een thema. Bij sommige werken miste ik een korte uitleg, vooral als je niet goed weet waar je op moet letten.

De is handig, vooral bij een schilderij dat recent is gerestaureerd: je hoort waarom de kleuren nu anders lijken dan op oude foto’s. Last Friday I visited the new exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot with colleagues. The admission fee is fairly high, but you get a lot in return: you walk past works from different stylistic periods, from old masters to contemporary art. The layout of the rooms is clear; each floor focuses on a theme. For some works I missed a short explanation, especially if you don't know what to look for.

The audio tour is useful, especially for a painting that has recently been restored: you learn why the colours now look different from in old photographs. A conservator explains how she evaluates her choices, without reshaping the artwork to suit contemporary taste. It's sensible to book in advance, because it gets busy at the weekend. First-time visitors are best off starting with a guided tour; afterwards you can take a more relaxed look at the masterpiece that appeals to you most at your own pace.
