Politeness and requests with zou (willen, kunnen, mogen)

Beleefdheid en wensen met zou (willen, kunnen, mogen)

De zou vorm wordt gebruikt om beleefde verzoeken te doen of mogelijkheden uit te drukken.

(The zou form is used to make polite requests or to express possibilities.)

What this structure is for (and why Dutch uses it)

Use zou + a modal verb to make a request or ask for permission more politely.

  • Zou je … willen …? = “Would you like to …?” (friendly request)
  • Zou je … kunnen …? = “Could you …?” (ability / practical possibility)
  • Zou ik … mogen …? = “May I …?” (permission)

The core pattern (word order you must get right)

Think in 3 blocks. Dutch keeps the infinitives at the end.

Block 1 Block 2 Block 3
Zou + subject rest of the sentence (time, object, etc.) modal infinitive + main verb infinitive
Zou je de offerte vandaag nog kunnen doorsturen?
Zou ik hier even mogen zitten?

Choosing the right modal: willen vs kunnen vs mogen

Use Best choice Typical context Example (Dutch)
Request (soft, friendly) willen You want someone to do something Zou je dit willen toelichten?
Request (practical / feasibility) kunnen Time, ability, possibility Zou je morgen om 10:00 kunnen bellen?
Permission mogen Rules, etiquette, “is it allowed?” Zou ik even het raam mogen openen?

Tip: In professional settings, zou … kunnen is often the most neutral.

Common word-order mistakes (and the correct fix)

  • Infinitives must stay together at the end:

Zou je kunnen de uitnodigingen sturen?
Zou je de uitnodigingen kunnen sturen?

  • With mogen you also keep the infinitives at the end:

    Zou ik even bellen mogen?
    Zou ik even mogen bellen?

  • Don’t conjugate the modal after zou:

    Zou je dit wilt uitleggen?
    Zou je dit willen uitleggen?

Useful “ready-to-use” professional phrases

  • Zou je dit document even kunnen nakijken?
  • Zou je me de cijfers willen doorsturen?
  • Zou ik daar een vraag over mogen stellen?
  • Zou ik de meeting 5 minuten later mogen starten?

Self-check: can you build the sentence correctly?

  1. Start with Zou + je/ik.

  2. Add the key info in the middle: who/what/when.

  3. End with willen/kunnen/mogen + infinitive.

  4. Check: Are both infinitives at the end and next to each other?

  1. Zou + verbs such as kunnen, willen, or mogen + verb in the infinitive
Werkwoord  (Verb)Vraag (Question)
zou + willen + infinitief (would + want + infinitive)Zou je me willen helpen? (Would you want to help me?)
zou + kunnen + infinitief (would + can + infinitive)Zou je dat kunnen doen? (Could you do that?)
zou + mogen + infinitief (would + may + infinitive)Zou ik dat mogen? (May I do that?)

Exercise 3: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence per block with "zou" for a polite request or permission.

1.
Incorrect: with "zou je ... kunnen" the infinitive phrase belongs at the end: correct is "Could you send the invitations ...?"
2.
Incorrect: with "mogen" the infinitive follows directly; the natural order is "mogen bellen", not "bellen mogen".
