The present conditional: regular forms

Le conditionnel présent : formes régulières

Le conditionnel présent exprime des actions ou des situations qui sont possibles ou hypothétiques. Par exemple, 'je chercherais', 'nous signerions'.

(The present conditional expresses actions or situations that are possible or hypothetical. For example, 'je chercherais', 'nous signerions'.)

What the present conditional expresses (conditionnel présent)

Use the present conditional to talk about something that is not certain:

  • Hypothesis: what would happen in a certain situation
  • Suggestion / polite request: softer than the present
  • Advice / preference: a nuanced opinion
French Typical meaning
Je signerais le bail. I would sign the lease (not a firm plan).
Vous demanderiez au propriétaire ? Would you ask the owner? (polite).
À votre place, je choisirais ce quartier. If I were you, I would choose this area (advice).

How to form it: future stem + imperfect endings

The formation rule is reliable and fast if you do it in two steps:

  1. Take the future simple stem (the form used before the endings in je parlerai, je finirai, je vendrai).
  2. Add the imparfait endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
Pronoun Ending Example Pronunciation tip
je / tu -ais je parlerais Often sounds like é (same as parlait).
il / elle / on -ait il finirait Sounds like é too.
nous -ions nous vendrions Clear “ee-on”.
vous -iez vous parleriez Clear “ee-é”.
ils / elles -aient ils finiraient Often also sounds like é.

Don’t confuse conditional and future: a quick visual check

These two are close because they share the same stem. The difference is the endings.

Future simple Present conditional Meaning
je je parlerai je parlerais will vs would
nous nous parlerons nous parlerions firm plan vs hypothetical
vous vous parlerez vous parleriez neutral vs polite/nuanced
  • If you can replace it with “would” in English, you probably need the conditionnel.
  • If you can replace it with “will”, you probably need the futur.

The most common structure: “si” + imperfect → conditional

For a present/future hypothesis (not real, just imagined):

Si + imparfait + …, conditionnel présent

Correct Why
Je signerais le contrat si le loyer était plus bas. si → imperfect (était), result → conditional (signerais).
Nous visiterions l’appartement si vous pouviez demain matin. Imperfect after si (pouviez), conditional for the result.

What to avoid:

  • Never use future after si: si le loyer baissera
  • Never use conditional after si: si le loyer baisserait

Irregular future stems you will meet often (so: irregular conditional too)

Because the conditional uses the future stem, the same verbs are irregular.

Infinitive Future/conditional stem Conditional example
être ser- je serais
avoir aur- nous aurions
aller ir- vous iriez
faire fer- il ferait
venir viendr- ils viendraient
pouvoir pourr- je pourrais
vouloir voudr- tu voudrais
devoir devr- elle devrait

Polite requests in real life: conditional as a “softener”

In professional contexts (email, customer service, negotiations), French uses the conditional to sound less direct.

More direct More polite / nuanced English
Vous demandez au propriétaire ? Vous demanderiez au propriétaire ? Do you ask / Would you ask…?
Je veux une visite demain. Je voudrais une visite demain. I want / I would like

Self-check: choose the right form in 10 seconds

  1. Is it a firm plan? → use future (je signerai).
  2. Is it hypothetical, conditional, or polite? → use conditional (je signerais).
  3. Is there a “if” idea (si)? → use si + imperfect and then conditional.
  4. Quick spelling check for -RE verbs: drop the final -e before endings: vendre → vendr- → je vendrais (not je venderais).
  1. To form the conditional, use the stem of the simple future and add the imperfect endings.
Verbe en -ER (parler) (-ER verb (to speak))Verbe en -IR (finir) (-IR verb (to finish))Verbe en -RE (vendre) (-RE verb (to sell))
Je parlerais  (I would speak)Je finirais (I would finish)Je vendrais (I would sell)
Tu parlerais  (You would speak)Tu finirais  (You would finish)Tu vendrais  (You would sell)
Il parlerait  (He would speak)Il finirait  (He would finish)Il vendrait  (He would sell)
Nous parlerions  (We would speak)Nous finirions  (We would finish)Nous vendrions  (We would sell)
Vous parleriez  (You would speak)Vous finiriez  (You would finish)Vous vendriez  (You would sell)
Ils parleraient  (They would speak)Ils finiraient  (They would finish)Ils vendraient  (They would sell)
