The imperative: object pronouns

L'impératif: pronoms compléments

Utilisez l’impératif avec pronoms compléments comme le, moi, en pour éviter des répétitions en donnant un ordre, ex: donne-le, envoie-moi.

(Use the imperative with object pronouns like le, moi, en to avoid repetition when giving an order, e.g. donne-le, envoie-moi.)

Imperative + pronoun: the French “attach it” rule

In English we say: “Send it.” In French, in the affirmative imperative (commands), the object pronoun is usually attached after the verb.

  • Verb + hyphen + pronoun
  • Not: pronoun + verb (that’s for normal sentences, not for positive commands)

Example: Télécharge le fichier. → Télécharge-le.

Step 1 — Decide what you replace (COD, COI, en, y)

Before placing the pronoun, identify what kind of complement you have.

What do you replace?Typical formPronoun
A thing / person directly after the verb (direct object = COD)le dossier, la lettre, les invitationsle / la / les
To/for someone (indirect object = COI)à Paul, à Marie, à nous / à vouslui / leur (or moi / toi / nous / vous in the imperative)
“Some / of it / of them” (de + something)parler de ça, chercher des offresen
“There / to it” (à + place/thing, or a place)aller à l’accueil, penser à çay

Step 2 — Put the pronoun after the verb (with a hyphen)

In a positive command, the order is:

Verb + - + pronoun

  • Envoie-moi le lien.
  • Imprime-la.
  • Présente-toi à l’accueil.

Common mistake:

  • Envoie moiEnvoie-moi
  • Moi envoieEnvoie-moi

Step 3 — If there are two pronouns: keep them together

Sometimes you replace two complements (e.g., “give it to me”). In the imperative, both pronouns go after the verb, linked with hyphens.

MeaningPatternExample
Give it to meVerb + -le/-la/-les + -moi/toi/nous/vousDonne-la-moi tout de suite.
Give it to him/herVerb + -le/-la/-les + -lui/leurDonne-la-lui demain.

Self-check: Do you see a hyphen between every element? (verb–pronoun–pronoun)

Special point: keep the -s with “tu” before en or y

With tu commands, many verbs normally drop the final -s (e.g., Parle !). But when you add en or y, French keeps the -s for pronunciation.

  • Parle ! → Parles-en. (Mention it / talk about it.)
  • Va ! → Vas-y. (Go there / go ahead.)
  • Prends ! → Prends-en. (Take some.)

Common mistakes:

  • Parle-en (here, it should be Parles-en)
  • Va-y (here, it should be Vas-y)

Quick decision guide (30 seconds)

  1. Is it a positive command? (Do…, Send…, Print…) → pronoun goes after.
  2. What are you replacing?
    • a thing/person directly → le / la / les
    • to/for someone → moi / toi / nous / vous / lui / leur
    • de + something → en
    • a place / à + something → y
  3. Attach it: verb + - + pronoun (and another - if there are two).
  4. Tu + en/y? Keep the -s: Parles-en, Vas-y.
  1. The object pronoun is always placed after the verb.
  2. There is always a "-" between the verb and the object pronoun.
  3. With the pronouns en or y, verbs keep the s (Prends-en ; Vas-y)
