Adverbs ending in ment: formation and placement

Adverbes en -ment : formation et place

Les adverbes en -ment décrivent comment une action se passe et se forment souvent avec un adjectif féminin + -ment : rapide, rapidement.

(Adverbs ending in -ment describe how an action happens and are often formed with a feminine adjective + -ment: rapide, rapidement.)

Adjective vs adverb: what changes?

  • Adjective describes a noun (a person/thing).
  • Adverb describes a verb (the action: how someone does it).
Ask yourself You need Example
“What is it like?” (the thing/person) Adjective

Un train lent.

“How does it happen?” (the action) Adverb

Le train arrive lentement.

How to form most -ment adverbs (the reliable recipe)

  1. Take the adjective.
  2. Put it in the feminine form (often add -e).
  3. Add -ment.
Adjective Feminine Adverb
rapide rapide rapidement
lent lente lentement
clair claire clairement
sérieux sérieuse sérieusement

Self-check: if you can say “d’une manière …”, you probably need an adverb.

The key exception: adjectives ending in -ent

If the adjective ends in -ent, the adverb ends in -emment (not -ement).

fréquent fréquemment

Spelling trap: frequentment / fréquentementfréquemment

Where to place the adverb (A2 default word order)

  • This is the safest placement for A2 conversation.
