Double pronouns (me le, me la)

Doubles pronoms (me le, me la)

L'ordre des pronoms est toujours fixe et ils se placent avant le verbe.

(The order of pronouns is always fixed and they are placed before the verb.)

What’s happening here: 2 objects → 2 pronouns

  • Direct object = the thing (what?) → le / la / l’ / les
  • Indirect object = the person (to whom?) → me / te / lui / nous / vous / leur

Goal: avoid repeating the noun and the “à + person”.

Full version 2-pronoun version Meaning
Il donne le livre à Marie. Il le lui donne. He gives it to her.
Il donne le livre à moi. Il me le donne. He gives it to me.

The key word order (most common A2 pattern)

When you use an indirect pronoun (me/te/nous/vous) + a direct pronoun (le/la/les), French uses this order:

me / te / nous / vous + le / la / les + verb

  • Il me le donne. (He gives it to me.)
  • Elle te la prête. (She lends it to you.)
  • Vous nous les envoyez. (You send them to us.)

Typical mistake: copying English order.

  • Il le donne à moi. (possible, but repetitive and not the target structure)
  • Il le me donne.
  • Il me le donne. ✅

Special case: with “lui / leur” (keep “lui/leur” first)

If the indirect pronoun is lui (to him/her) or leur (to them), it normally comes before the direct pronoun:

lui / leur + le / la / les + verb

  • Il lui les montre. (He shows them to him/her.)
  • Ils leur la proposent. (They offer it to them.)

Self-check: If you see à lui / à elle / à eux in the full sentence → your pronoun will be lui / leur.

Where the pronouns go with different verb forms

  • Present / near future: pronouns go before the verb.
    • Je vous le donne.
    • Je vais vous le donner.
  • Passé composé: pronouns go before the auxiliary (avoir/être).
    • Il me l’a rendu.
    • Elle leur lesa envoyés.

Imperative (commands): pronouns move after the verb

In commands, French attaches pronouns to the verb with hyphens:

  • Décrivez-le-moi. (Describe it to me.)
  • Donnez-la-moi. (Give it to me.)
  • Envoyez-les-moi. (Send them to me.)

What to notice: you write verb–direct–indirect (not *verb–indirect–direct*).

  • Donnez-moi-la.
  • Donnez-la-moi. ✅

Mini-method: build it in 10 seconds

  1. Identify the thing (what?) → le/la/les
  2. Identify the person (to whom?) → me/te/lui/nous/vous/leur
  3. Choose the verb form:
    • Normal sentence → pronouns before the verb
    • Passé composé → pronouns before the auxiliary
    • Command → pronouns after the verb with hyphens
  4. Check the order:
    • me/te/nous/vous + le/la/les
    • lui/leur + le/la/les
    • Command: verb–le/la/les–moi/toi/lui/nous/vous/leur

Quick accuracy checklist (common pitfalls)

  • Don’t split pronouns between auxiliary and past participle:
    • Il a rendu me le.
    • Il me l’a rendu. ✅
  • Use l’ before a vowel sound:
    • Il me l’a donné. (not me le a)
  • In commands, write the hyphens:
    • Envoyez-les-moi. ✅

Exercise 1: Multiple choice

Instruction: Choose the correct answer

1. Votre sac à main ? D'accord, décrivez‑___, s'il vous plaît.

Your handbag? All right, describe ___ to me, please.

2. Je n'ai plus mon passeport : je l'ai donné au réceptionniste, et il ___ a rendu ce matin.

I no longer have my passport: I gave it to the receptionist, and he ___ gave it back to me this morning.

4. Vous avez les photos du vol ? Envoyez‑___ par e‑mail, c'est urgent.

Do you have the photos of the theft? Send ___ to me by email, it's urgent.

Exercise 2: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence.

1.
Placement error: "le" here is treated as a noun; it must be a pronoun placed before the verb → "je vous le donne."
Incorrect order: pronouns should be placed "vous" then "le" before the verb → "je vous le donne."
2.
Incorrect order: pronouns are not placed between the auxiliary and the past participle; say "il me l’a donné."
Incorrect placement: pronouns must be before the auxiliary/verb, not after "a donné."

Exercise 3: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Rewrite each sentence by replacing the two complements with the two appropriate pronouns, placed before the verb (e.g.: He lends the book to Marie → He lends it to her).
