Near future vs simple future

Futur proche vs futur simple

Le futur proche est utilisé pour des actions immédiates ou proches, tandis que le futur simple exprime des événements plus lointains. Exemple : 'Je vais inviter', 'Je ferai'.

(The futur proche is used for actions that are immediate or coming soon, while the futur simple expresses events that are farther in the future. Example: “Je vais inviter”, “Je ferai”.)

Futur proche vs futur simple: the decision you actually make

You’re not choosing “a future”. You’re choosing a perspective.

  • Futur proche = you see the action as already on the way (imminent / decided / strongly intended).
  • Futur simple = you see the action as in the future (plan, prediction, promise), without the “it’s starting now” feeling.
Think Choose Typical time words
“It’s about to happen / I’m set on doing it.” Je vais + infinitive tout de suite, maintenant, dans 2 minutes, ce soir (often)
“It will happen (later) / I predict / I promise.” verb in futur simple demain, la semaine prochaine, le mois prochain, un jour

How to build each tense (and what learners mix up)

  • Futur proche = aller (conjugated) + infinitive
    • Je vais appeler, tu vas envoyer, nous allons préparer, ils vont partir
  • Futur simple = stem + ending
    • -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont
    • je parlerai, tu parleras, il/elle parlera, nous parlerons, vous parlerez, ils/elles parleront

Common mistake: don’t combine both systems.

  • Je vais préparerai
  • Je vais préparer(futur proche)
  • Je préparerai(futur simple)

A quick self-check: which one sounds right?

  1. Is it already starting / almost immediate? (you have the keys, people are arriving, you’re leaving now) → futur proche
  2. Is it more “scheduled / later / general future”? (next week, next month, in ten years) → futur simple
  3. Is it a promise or a formal commitment? → often futur simple
    • Je vous rappellerai demain. (I will call you tomorrow.)

Time expressions: useful, but not automatic

Time words guide you, but they don’t force one tense. The nuance matters.

Time phrase More natural with Why
tout de suite / dans 2 minutes futur proche immediate, “about to happen”
demain often futur simple (but both possible) tomorrow can be “already decided” or just “later”
le mois prochain / dans dix ans futur simple more distant / less “in motion now”
un jour futur simple vague and distant by nature

What native speakers do (and what your course expects)

  • In conversation, French uses futur proche a lot for near plans: Ce soir, je vais…
  • In structured exercises, you’re often expected to show the contrast:
    • near / imminent → futur proche
    • later / distant / “one day” → futur simple

Mini model sentences you can reuse (professional context)

  • Futur proche (imminent / decided):
    • Je vais envoyer le rapport tout de suite.
    • On va démarrer la réunion dans deux minutes.
  • Futur simple (later / promise / prediction):
    • Je vous confirmerai la décision demain.
    • Nous signerons le contrat le mois prochain.

What you should pay attention to

  • Don’t translate word-for-word from English “going to” vs “will”. In French, it’s mainly about immediacy/intention vs simple future framing.
  • Check the structure first:
    • futur proche: vais/vas/allons/allez/vont + infinitive
    • futur simple: one conjugated verb (no “aller”)
  • Listen for context clues: “Wait, it’s happening”, “I’m ready”, “right now” → futur proche.
  1. Futur proche: imminent action or intention to do something soon.
  2. Futur simple: future action without immediate timing.
Temps (Tense)Règle (Rule)Exemple (Example)
Futur procheAller + infinitifJe vais sortir ce soir. (I’m going to go out tonight.)
Futur simpleRadical + -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ontJe serai médecin. (I will be a doctor.)

Exceptions!

  1. The futur proche is used more often in spoken French.

Exercise 1: Multiple choice

Instruction: Choose the correct answer

1. J'ai les clés : je ____ rendre visite à ma copine tout de suite.

I have the keys: I ____ visit my girlfriend right away.

2. Pour ton anniversaire, je t'____ un cadeau demain.

For your birthday, I ____ you a present tomorrow.

3. Attends, les amis arrivent : je ____ inviter aussi mon copain.

Wait, friends are arriving: I ____ invite my boyfriend too.

4. Le week-end prochain, nous ____ entre amis chez moi.

Next weekend, we ____ with friends at my place.

Exercise 2: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence (near future or simple future).

1.
Correct simple future form, but for "ce soir" we often prefer the near future when the action is immediate.
Construction error: do not mix "vais" with a simple future ending; use either "je vais préparer" or "je préparerai".
2.
Conjugation error: the simple future ending is missing ("j’organiserai").
Acceptable in speech, but for "le mois prochain" the simple future is generally expected in a formal exercise.

Exercise 3: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Rewrite each sentence by changing the tense: near future (aller + infinitive) ↔ simple future. Example: Je vais partir → Je partirai.
