Near future vs simple future

Futur proche vs futur simple

Le futur proche est utilisé pour des actions immédiates ou proches, tandis que le futur simple exprime des événements plus lointains. Exemple : 'Je vais inviter', 'Je ferai'.

(The futur proche is used for immediate or near actions, while the futur simple expresses more distant events. Example: 'Je vais inviter', 'Je ferai'.)

Choose the right future: “near” plan vs “simple” future

French has two very common ways to talk about the future. They often translate to English “will” and “going to”, but the French choice is more about how close / how decided the action is.

What you want to express Best choice (A2) Typical time words
Very soon / already decided / you feel it’s about to happen Futur proche (aller + infinitive) ce soir, maintenant, tout de suite, dans 5 minutes, demain (often)
Future in general / more distant / not “imminent” Futur simple un jour, l’année prochaine, plus tard, dans 10 ans, bientôt (general)

Futur proche (aller + infinitive): build it like a mini-formula

Structure: subject + aller (present) + infinitive

  • Je vais + partir. (I’m going to leave.)
  • Tu vas + appeler le client. (You’re going to call the client.)
  • On va + signer. (We’re going to sign.)

Self-check: if you can add “right now / very soon” naturally in your head, futur proche usually works well.

  • Attention, le téléphone sonne : je vais répondre.
  • Dans dix minutes, on va commencer.

Futur simple: one word, but you must build the ending correctly

Structure: stem + ending

Person Ending Example (parler)
je-aije parlerai
tu-astu parleras
il/elle/on-ail parlera
nous-onsnous parlerons
vous-ezvous parlerez
ils/elles-ontils parleront

Pronunciation tip: in je parlerai, the final sound is often like “é” (parlerai ≈ “parleré”).

How to decide in real life (fast decision guide)

  1. Is it imminent / already in motion? → use futur proche.
    • Les invités sont là : je vais ouvrir.
  2. Is it a future fact or a more distant plan? → use futur simple.
    • Un jour, je ferai une grande fête.
  3. With “demain / cette semaine / ce week-end”:
    • Futur proche is very common (especially speaking).
    • Futur simple is also possible, but can sound a bit more formal or “scheduled”.

Common mistakes to avoid (these create wrong French)

  • Don’t mix both futures in one verb group:
    • Je vais prépareraiJe vais préparer / Je préparerai
  • After “aller”, the second verb stays infinitive:
    • Je vais je signeJe vais signer
  • Conjugate “aller” correctly:
    • Je vaJe vais
    • Nous vaNous allons

Mini self-check before you speak

  • Step 1: Add a time idea: tonight / tomorrow / one day / next year.
  • Step 2: Ask: “Is it close & decided?”
    • Yes → je vais + infinitive
    • No / general → futur simple
  • Step 3: Say it in one clean form (no mixing).
  1. Futur proche: imminent action or intention to do something soon.
  2. Futur simple: future action without immediate precision.
Temps (Tense)Règle (Rule)Exemple (Example)
Futur procheAller + infinitifJe vais sortir ce soir. (I’m going out tonight.)
Futur simpleRadical + -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ontJe serai médecin. (I will be a doctor.)

Exceptions!

  1. The futur proche is used more often in spoken French.
