When to use le futur simple

Use le futur simple to talk about future facts, plans, and predictions.

• Decision / plan: Demain, je finirai le dossier.
• Prediction: Le concert commencera à 20 h.
• Promise: Je vous appellerai ce soir.

Build it in 2 steps (the core idea)

1. Take the future “base”
   • -ER / -IR: keep the full infinitive (jouer, finir)
   • Most -RE: remove the final -e (vendre → vendr-)
2. Add the endings (same endings for all verbs)

What to pay attention to (common mistakes)

• Don’t build it from the present tense.
  • je joueai → je jouerai (infinitive jouer + -ai)
  • nous écoutonsrons → nous écouterons (infinitive écouter + -ons)
• For -RE verbs: drop only the final -e.
  • nous venderons → nous vendrons (vendre → vendr-)
  • ils vendreront → ils vendront
• Je endings: -ai (future) vs -ais (conditional).
  • Demain, je finirai. (future)
  • Si j’avais le temps, je finirais. (conditional)

Spelling changes you will see (same sound, better spelling)

Some verbs slightly change spelling to keep pronunciation smooth. This is normal.

• acheter → j’achèterai, tu achèteras, il achètera (accent appears)
• appeler → j’appellerai (double “l”)
• payer → je paierai / je payerai (both exist; payerai is very common)

Quick self-check before you speak

1. Did I use the infinitive (or -RE minus final -e)?
2. Did I choose the correct ending?
   • je = -ai | tu = -as | il/elle/on = -a
   • nous = -ons | vous = -ez | ils/elles = -ont
3. Is there a known spelling change (like achèter-)?
