Understand the logic: destination vs. origin

With these movement verbs, the key question is simple:

• Where am I going? → destination → usually à / sometimes chez
• Where am I coming from? → origin → usually de

Which verb + which preposition (the reliable combinations)

Learn these as fixed “chunks”. They cover most A2 situations.

À or chez? Choose “place” vs “person/professional”

• à + a place/institution/location: à l’agence, à l’hôtel, à la gare, au bureau
• chez + a person, a home, or a professional (their place): chez Paul, chez le client, chez le médecin, chez le notaire

In professional contexts:

• Je vais chez le client. (to the client’s place)
• Je vais à l’agence. (to the agency as a place/institution)

Common traps (and how to self-correct fast)

• Trap 1: mixing direction with the wrong preposition
  • Je vais de l’agence. ✅ Je vais à l’agence.
  • Je viens à l’agence. ✅ Je viens de l’agence. (origin)
• Trap 2: using “en” for a place like “the agency”
  • Je suis en l’agence. ✅ Je suis à l’agence.
  • J’arrive en l’agence. ✅ J’arrive à l’agence.
• Trap 3: overusing “chez” with non-human places
  • Je vais chez l’agence. ✅ Je vais à l’agence.

Quick self-check before you speak

1. Am I describing a destination or an origin?
2. If it’s a destination: is it a place (→ à) or a person/professional (→ chez)?
3. If it’s an origin: use de (venir/partir).

Mini test: If you can replace it with English to → choose à/chez. If it’s from → choose de.

Useful contrast: “partir” vs “aller” in practice

• partir de = focus on the starting point: Nous partons de l’agence à 9 h.
• aller à = focus on the destination: Nous allons à l’agence à 9 h.
