The core idea: destination vs origin

With movement verbs, French makes the direction clear with the preposition:

  • Destination (where you go) → usually à / sometimes chez
  • Origin (where you come from) → usually de

Choose the right preposition in 10 seconds

  1. Ask “Where is the movement pointing?”
    • To a place (destination) → à / chez
    • From a place (origin) → de
  2. Pick the verb (aller / venir / partir / arriver / revenir / retourner / rentrer).
  3. Then attach the correct preposition (don’t translate word-for-word from English).

“À” vs “chez”: what’s the difference?

  • à + place = a location as a place/building/institution
    • Je vais à l’agence. / au bureau. / à l’hôtel.
  • chez + person / professional = “at someone’s place” (home, office, practice)
    • Je vais chez le client.
    • Nous allons chez le médecin.

Common trap: an agency is a place, not a person → à l’agence (not chez l’agence).

Revenir, retourner, rentrer: “going back” with different nuance

  • revenir + à = to come back (often to where you were before)
    • Je reviens à l’agence à 18 h.
  • retourner + à = to return / go back (often more “go back again”)
    • Il retourne à l’agence pour signer le contrat.
  • rentrer + à / chez = to go home / to return inside (context decides)
    • Je rentre à la maison.
    • Je rentre chez moi.
    • Nous rentrons au bureau après le rendez-vous.

Mini “direction check” with correct vs wrong

  • Destination
    • ✅ Je vais à l’agence.
    • ❌ Je vais de l’agence. (this would suggest “from”)
  • Origin
    • ✅ Je viens de l’agence.
    • ❌ Je viens à l’agence. (not how French marks origin)
  • Arriving
    • ✅ Nous arrivons à l’agence.
    • ❌ Nous arrivons de l’agence. (that would mean “we arrive from…”, i.e., origin)

What to pay attention to (typical A2 mistakes)

  • Don’t mix direction: aller/arriver normally take à, venir/partir take de.
  • Don’t invent “en l’…” with these places: say à l’agence, not en l’agence.
  • Use “chez” for people (client, doctor), not for institutions like an agency.
