In French, the present conditional is a standard way to make a request sound polite, professional, and less direct.

Direct (can sound demanding): Je veux… / Je peux…
Polite (preferred in service + work contexts): Je voudrais… / J’aimerais… / On pourrait…

The core pattern: conditional form + infinitive

Use:

Je voudrais + infinitive (I would like)
J’aimerais + infinitive (I would love / I’d like)
On pourrait + infinitive (Could we / We could)

Self-check: infinitive or conjugated verb?

After voudrais / aimerais / pourrait, you normally put a verb in the infinitive (the dictionary form).

OK: Je voudrais savoir… / J’aimerais prendre… / On pourrait voir…
Not OK: ~~Je voudrais sais…~~ ~~J’aimerais prends…~~ ~~On pourrait voyons…~~

Common trap: conditional vs future (voudrais ≠ voudrai)

These look similar, but they don’t mean the same thing:

j’aimerais	I would like / I’d love	Polite request
j’aimerai	I will love / I will like	Future (not a polite request)

Quick recognition tip: -ais / -ait often signals the conditional sound (voudrais, aimerais, pourrait).

Why “on pourrait” (and not “nous pourrions”)?

On is extremely common in spoken French and often means we (informal-neutral, not childish).

Natural spoken request: On pourrait avoir le programme ?
More formal / written: Nous pourrions avoir le programme ?

In this lesson, focus on the high-frequency spoken pattern: on + pourrait (3rd person singular).

Making a direct question polite: a practical “upgrade” recipe

Start with: Je voudrais / J’aimerais / On pourrait
Add an infinitive: avoir, savoir, connaître, expliquer, réserver…
Optional polite closer: s’il vous plaît
