Hoy en día la primera comunión no siempre se vive como un acto religioso. Para muchas familias, la parte de la iglesia pasa a un segundo plano y prima la celebración: el vestido, el banquete y los regalos. Algunas comuniones se organizan a lo grande, casi como mini-bodas: se reserva hotel, se contrata animación y se sugiere una cantidad económica como regalo.

En 2022 las familias españolas gastaron de media más de 2.000 euros en estas celebraciones, y la cifra ha crecido en los últimos años. Una socióloga señala que, al disminuir el número de afiliados a la religión, también han bajado las ceremonias religiosas tradicionales. Además, las redes sociales influyen en la difusión de ostentación y en el deseo de reproducir esas imágenes en la vida real.

Es probable que en el futuro estas fiestas adquieran un significado más vital que religioso, sirviendo para marcar la entrada del niño en una nueva etapa de su vida. Esto ha creado un mercado específico de empresas que organizan comuniones.
