The key rule after si: no “future”, no “would”

In Spanish, the verb right after si does not use:

Futuro (e.g., ~~si vendrá~~)
Condicional (e.g., ~~si vendría~~)
Imperativo (e.g., ~~si ven~~)
Presente de subjuntivo (e.g., ~~si venga~~)

Instead, choose the tense after si based on whether the condition is real or imagined.

Step 1: Decide if it’s real, hypothetical, or impossible (past)

Step 2: Build the sentence (the 4 most useful patterns)

Your mental shortcut (works fast in conversation)

Real: “If (in general / really), then …” → si + present
Imagined now: “If (hypothetically), would …” → si + imperfect subjunctive
Imagined past: “If (had…), would have …” → si + pluperfect subjunctive

English trap: English allows “If he would come…”. Spanish doesn’t: ~~Si vendría~~ ✗ → Si viniera ✓.

Mixed conditionals: when the past affects “now” or “later”

Use a past unreal condition (something didn’t happen), but the result is about the present or future.

Tip: words like ahora, hoy, mañana, este mes often reveal the time of the consequence.

Self-check: 4 questions to choose the right tense

Is it realistic? → yes: si + presente.
Is it imagined (now/future)? → si + imperfecto de subjuntivo.
Is it impossible because it’s in the past? → si + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo.
Is the result about now/tomorrow? → choose condicional simple for the result (mixed).

Common mistakes (and quick fixes)

Future after si: ~~Si la editorial lanzará…~~ → Si la editorial lanza…
Conditional after si: ~~Si el autor participaría…~~ → Si el autor participara…
Present subjunctive after si: ~~Si el moderador resuma…~~ → Si el moderador resume…
Wrong “past unreal” form: ~~Si habríamos leído…~~ → Si hubiéramos leído…

After si we don’t use the future, the conditional, the imperative, or the present subjunctive.
Imaginary situations use the subjunctive (imperfect for present/future, pluperfect for the past).

Exceptions!

Mixed: result in present ⇒ the consequence affects the current situation (Si hubiera ganado más dinero, ahora estaría en Hawái).
Mixed: result in future ⇒ the consequence is projected into the future (Si hubiera ganado más dinero, me marcharía mañana).
