Expressing evaluation: ha ido bien, salió fatal, es buena idea

Expresando valoración: ha ido bien, salió fatal, es buena idea

Hay estructuras para expresar opinión o reacción ante una acción o situación.

(There are structures to express an opinion or reaction to an action or situation.)

What these structures do: express an evaluation (and choose mood)

Spanish often separates your opinion from the fact/event.

  • Evaluation of how something went: salir / ir + bien, mal, fatal…
  • Evaluation of a situation/idea: lo veo / lo encuentro + adjective
  • Judgement: es / me parece / considero / me resulta + adjective or noun
  • Reaction + “that …” clause: often triggers subjunctive

1) “It went well/badly”: salir / ir + adverb

  • Structure: La reunión + salió + bien/mal/fatal.
  • Meaning: the focus is the result/outcome, not the meeting itself.
SpanishNatural English
La reunión salió fatal. The meeting went terribly.
Todo salió bien.Everything went well.
La negociación fue bien. (incorrect)In Spanish you don’t say “it was well”.

Typical pitfall: don’t translate word-for-word “went out”. Salir here simply means “to turn out / to go”.

2) “I find it…”: lo veo / lo encuentro + adjective

Use this when you evaluate a situation/plan as complex, risky, unfair, reasonable…

  • Structure: Lo + veo/encuentro + adjective.
  • Lo refers to the whole idea (not a specific masculine noun).
SpanishWhat “lo” refers to
Lo veo complicado ahora.the situation / the proposal / “this” in general
Lo encuentro injusto.the decision / the rule / the arrangement

Self-check: Can you replace the whole topic by “this”? If yes, lo usually works.

3) “It seems/It is…”: adjective or noun (no “that” clause yet)

  • Es / Me parece / Considero / Me resulta + adjective: importante, lógico, preocupante, raro…
  • …or + noun: una buena idea, un error, una falta de respeto…
SpanishNote
Considero importante esta medida.Direct evaluation of a noun (“this measure”).
Me resulta un error firmar sin leer.Noun judgement (“an error”).

4) “Lo de …”: a practical way to name “the whole issue of …”

Lo de turns an action/topic into a compact “thing”. Very common in conversation.

  • Structure: Me parece + adjective + lo de + infinitive / phrase.
  • Meaning: “the thing about… / the whole business of…”
SpanishNatural English
Me parece positivo lo de reunirse.I think it’s positive, the thing about meeting up.
Veo innecesario lo de discutir por correo.I find the whole “arguing by email” unnecessary.

Tip: If you want a more formal option, you can often use el hecho de + infinitive instead.

5) When you add “que …”: this is where subjunctive usually appears

Many evaluation phrases introduce a second clause with que. After that, Spanish often uses the subjunctive because it’s your judgement, not a neutral report.

TriggerPatternExample
Es / Me parece + adj. … que + subjuntivo Es importante que todos participen.
Está bien/mal/genial… … que + subjuntivo Está mal que no hablen.
¡Qué bien/mal…! … que + subjuntivo ¡Qué bien que lo hicieran!
  • Key idea: You are not saying “they do it” as a simple fact; you are reacting to it.
  • Common mistake: Es importante que todos participan → Es importante que todos participen.

6) “(It’s) a good/bad idea that …”: indicative or subjunctive?

Ser + buena/mala idea que… is often followed by subjunctive, especially when you judge the action as advisable/not advisable.

What you meanPreferred moodExample
Evaluation/advice Subjunctive Es buena idea que revisemos el contrato.
More like “it was a fact that…” (less common with this expression) Indicative (context-dependent) Fue una casualidad que llegaron a la vez. (Not “buena/mala idea”, but shows the “fact” pattern.)

Practical rule for B2: with buena/mala idea que, choose subjunctive unless you have a strong reason not to.

Quick self-check: choose the right structure

  1. Are you judging the outcome? → salir/ir + bien/mal/fatal.
  2. Are you calling the situation complex/unfair/risky? → Lo veo / Lo encuentro + adjective.
  3. Are you reacting to a whole clause (“that…”)? → … que + subjuntivo.
  4. Do you want a compact “the whole issue of…”? → lo de + infinitive.
ExpresionesEjemplo

Me parece / Veo + adjetivo + lo deMe parece positivo lo de reunirse. (I think the idea of getting together is positive.)

Incorrect: after «It's a good idea that» the subjunctive is required, not the indicative («we distribute» is in the indicative).
2.
Incorrect: the form «was gone terribly» does not exist. You have to use «it went terribly» or «it was terrible».
