Estos adverbios expresan necesidad, obligación, emoción o valoración personal del hablante.

(These adverbs express the speaker’s necessity, obligation, emotion, or personal evaluation.)

What these adverbs do (evaluative adverbs)

These -mente adverbs let you add your evaluation to a statement:

  • necessity / obligation: necesariamente, forzosamente
  • inevitable consequence: inevitablemente
  • emotion / attitude: afortunadamente, desgraciadamente, lamentablemente
  • personal viewpoint: personalmente
  • judgement about how something was done: correctamente

They answer: “How do I see this information?” not “What happened?”.

Form: how to build them (and the one key spelling rule)

Base Rule Example
feminine adjective + -mente inevitableinevitablemente
adjectives ending in -o use feminine -a + -mente correctocorrecta + -mentecorrectamente
  • Accent check: keep the adjective’s original accent if it has one: rápidarápidamente.
  • Write as one word: inevitable menteinevitablemente.

Non-negotiable rule: they never change

These adverbs are invariable. No gender, no plural.

Position in the sentence: where it sounds most natural

Three high-frequency positions. Choose based on what you want to highlight.

  1. At the beginning (sets your attitude from the start):

Afortunadamente, superó el periodo de prueba.

  2. After the verb / inside commas (more “editorial”, common in formal Spanish):

La empresa debe, necesariamente, cotizar a la Seguridad Social.

  3. At the end (sounds like an afterthought; common with lamentablemente):

No podemos pedir más días libres, lamentablemente.

Tip: If you add it at the start, use a comma. If you insert it in the middle, use two commas.

Self-check: quick quality control before you speak

  • Function: Am I evaluating the situation (not describing a noun)?
  • Form: Is it one word and spelled correctly (-mente)?
  • Agreement: Did I avoid gender/number changes? (Adverbs stay the same.)
  • Placement: Does the comma placement match the position I chose?

Mini models for professional conversation

  • Personal stance: Personalmente, preferiría + infinitive.
  • Requirement: Para + infinitive, necesariamente + tener que + infinitive.
  • Consequence: Si + present, inevitablemente + present.
  • Good/Bad news: Afortunadamente / Lamentablemente, + statement.
