Estilo indirecto – imperativo


Usamos que + presente de subjuntivo para repetir una orden.

(We use que + present subjunctive to repeat an order.)

When a command becomes reported speech: use que + present subjunctive

In Spanish, when you report an order/request (instead of quoting it), you normally switch from imperative to present subjunctive after que.

Direct command (imperative) Reported command (indirect style)
«Actúa correctamente» Te he dicho que actúes correctamente.
«No grites» Te he dicho que no grites.

The 3-step checklist (fast and reliable)

  1. Identify the verb of ordering: decir, pedir, insistir, recordar, ordenar, recomendar, exigir…

  2. Add que.

  3. Put the action you want in present subjunctive (and keep the negative with no).

Pattern: Verbo de orden + (a alguien) + que + subjuntivo

Why subjunctive here? (the idea, not the theory)

Because it’s not information or a fact. It’s influence: what someone wants another person to do.

  • Fact → indicative: Dice que llegas tarde (statement).

  • Request/order → subjunctive: Dice que llegues temprano (instruction).

Most common verbs that trigger this structure

ordenar, exigir, insistir en, mandar pedir, decir, recordar, recomendar, sugerir

Work-context examples:

  • El coordinador insistió en que tengas más constancia.

  • La jefa de proyecto me pidió que no llegue tarde.

  • RR. HH. nos recordó que actuemos con respeto.

Negatives: the position of no

In reported commands, no goes right before the subjunctive verb.

  • Te he dicho que no grites en la reunión.

  • Pidieron que no interrumpamos al cliente.

  • Te he dicho que grites no

Who is the subject? That decides the verb form

The subjunctive verb agrees with the person who must do the action.

Who must do it? Example
yo Me pidieron que hable con más seguridad.
Insistieron en que seas puntual.
nosotros/as Nos recordaron que actuemos con profesionalidad.
vosotros/as La coordinadora dijo que no lleguéis tarde.

Typical learner traps (and quick fixes)

  • Trap: using indicative because it feels like “that…” in English.

    Fix: if it’s an order/request, go straight to subjunctive: dijo que + subj.

  • Trap: keeping the imperative.

    Fix: imperative is for direct speech; reported speech needs que + subj.

    Te he dicho que actúa correctamente. → Te he dicho que actúes correctamente.

  • Trap: confusing vs usted forms.

    Fix: in indirect commands you don’t “see” tú/usted; you only choose the person in the subjunctive: que llegues / que llegue.

Special emphasis: repeating an order with ¡Que + subjuntivo!

Spanish can repeat an order emphatically with ¡Que + subjuntivo! (often impatient/urgent).

  • ¡Que te vayas ahora mismo!

  • ¡Que no grites!

Use with care: it can sound abrupt in professional contexts.

Self-check: do you need subjunctive here?

  • Is someone trying to get someone else to do something? → Yes: que + present subjunctive.

  • Is it just reporting information or an opinion? → likely indicative.

  • Can you replace it with “He/She wants…” in English? → usually subjunctive.

  1. To change the imperative into reported speech, the subjunctive is used.

Exceptions!

  1. To repeat an order, you can use the subjunctive. Vete ahora mismo / ¡Qué te vayas!

  • ¿Qué órdenes concretas os dieron en la reunión y quién las dio? (What specific orders were given during the meeting and who gave them?)
  • ¿Qué comportamientos del equipo generan tensión (impuntualidad, inconstancia, falta de modales)? Da ejemplos reales o plausibles. (What team behaviors create tension (tardiness, inconsistency, poor manners)? Give real or plausible examples.)
