Los focalizadores son adverbios que refuerzan una idea.

(Focalizers are adverbs that reinforce an idea.)

What are focusing adverbs?

In this unit you work with adverbs like particularmente, especialmente, totalmente, realmente

These are called focalizadores because they:

  • intensify an idea (make it stronger)
  • highlight what is important for the speaker
  • express attitude (certainty, evaluation, precision)

In English they are similar to: especially, particularly, totally, absolutely, really, truly, exactly, slightly.

1. The main focusing adverbs in this unit

Adverb Main idea Similar in English
particularmente one specific part, not all particularly
especialmente more than normal, stands out especially
totalmente 100%, without limits totally, completely, fully
absolutamente no exception, very firm absolutely
realmente the speaker’s sincere opinion really, genuinely
verdaderamente emphasises that it is truly like that truly, really
precisamente exactly this, not another exactly, precisely
justamente at that exact moment / rightly just, exactly, rightly
ligeramente small degree slightly

2. Where do I put these adverbs?

The good news: the position is usually very similar to English.

  • Before an adjective or participle

Pattern: adverb + adjective / participle

  • La oferta es especialmente competitiva.
  • Estamos totalmente preparados.
  • Es absolutamente obligatorio.
  • Before a noun phrase (with ser, parecer, interesar…)

Pattern: verb + adverb + noun phrase

  • Nos interesa particularmente el mercado asiático.
  • Buscamos especialmente clientes mayoristas.
  • Before a verb in simple tenses

Pattern: subject + adverb + verb

  • Realmente necesitamos reducir los costes.
  • El arancel ligeramente aumentó este trimestre.

Self-check

  • If you can say it in English as really/especially/absolutely + adj, you can normally say it in Spanish as realmente/especialmente/absolutamente + adj.
  • If you can say it in English as really/especially + noun, use the same position in Spanish.

3. What is the difference in meaning?

All these adverbs strengthen what you say, but with different nuances.

To highlight one element particularmente, especialmente
Nos interesa especialmente el transporte marítimo.
→ Maritime transport is the key focus.
To express strong certainty / totality totalmente, absolutamente
Estamos totalmente de acuerdo.
Es absolutamente necesario.
→ Very strong commitment.
To give a personal evaluation realmente, verdaderamente
La oferta es realmente interesante.
El sistema es verdaderamente complejo.
→ Your honest opinion, not just objective fact.
To express exactness precisamente, justamente
Necesitamos precisamente esa documentación.
→ That one, not another.
To express a small degree ligeramente
Los costes han subido ligeramente.
→ A little, not a lot.

4. Very frequent combinations (sound “natural”)

Some adverb + adjective combinations are especially common and sound very fluent:

totalmente de acuerdo Estamos totalmente de acuerdo con las condiciones.
realmente bueno / realmente útil La propuesta es realmente buena para nosotros.
verdaderamente bien / verdaderamente complejo El equipo funciona verdaderamente bien.

You can of course create other combinations, but these are safe, natural choices in conversation.

5. Common doubts and typical mistakes

  • “Realmente” vs “verdaderamente”

For daily business Spanish, you can normally use them almost as synonyms:

  • Es realmente caro.
  • Es verdaderamente caro.

Small nuance (not obligatory):

  • realmente → more used, slightly more informal, very frequent in speech.
  • verdaderamente → a bit more emphatic or formal.
  • “Totalmente” vs “absolutamente”

Both mean “completely”, but:

  • totalmente → neutral, very common: totalmente preparado, totalmente seguro.
  • absolutamente → stronger, often with rules and obligations: absolutamente obligatorio, absolutamente necesario.
  • Word order with “justamente” and “precisamente”

Both are flexible:

  • El representante llegó justamente antes de firmar.
  • El representante justamente llegó antes de firmar. (less common, but possible in context)
  • Necesitamos precisamente esa certificación.
  • Precisamente esa certificación necesitamos. (more emphatic)

As a B2 learner, prefer the simpler position: adverb just before the word you want to emphasise.

  • Don’t overuse them

In Spanish, as in English, too many intensifiers sound emotional or unprofessional:

Es absolutamente, realmente, totalmente perfecto.

More natural:

Es realmente perfecto para nuestro objetivo.

6. Step-by-step: how to choose the right adverb

When you speak or write, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do I want to highlight one specific part?
    → Use particularmente / especialmente.
    • Nos interesa especialmente el mercado alemán.
  2. Do I want to show total agreement or obligation?
    → Use totalmente / absolutamente.
    • Estamos totalmente seguros de la decisión.
    • Es absolutamente obligatorio presentar la factura.
  3. Do I want to give a clear personal opinion?
    → Use realmente / verdaderamente.
    • Me parece realmente interesante tu propuesta.
  4. Do I want to say “exactly this / at exactly this moment”?
    → Use precisamente / justamente.
    • Buscamos precisamente ese tipo de proveedor.
  5. Do I want to say “only a little”?
    → Use ligeramente.
    • El plazo se ha ampliado ligeramente.

7. Quick self-check

Use this checklist to see if you are using these adverbs correctly:

  • 1. Is the adverb just before the word I want to emphasise (adjective, noun, verb)?
  • 2. Is my sentence still correct if I remove the adverb? (Then the adverb is only adding emphasis, not changing meaning.)
  • 3. Is my tone appropriate for business? (Not too many intensifiers in one sentence.)
  • 4. Did I choose the adverb according to my intention?
    • Highlight one element → especialmente, particularmente
    • Show totality / obligation → totalmente, absolutamente
    • Give personal evaluation → realmente, verdaderamente
    • Exactness → precisamente, justamente
    • Small degree → ligeramente

If you can answer “yes” to these points, you are using Spanish focusing adverbs at a solid B2 level.
