Adverbs of manner answer: How is the action done?

Adverb → describes the action / verb: Me llamó desesperadamente (How did they call? Desperately.)
Adjective → describes the person / thing: Me llamó desesperado (What was he like? Desperate.)

How to form them (-mente): the part that causes most mistakes

Start from the adjective in the feminine singular form.
Add -mente.

Where to place the adverb in the sentence

In professional Spanish, the most neutral positions are:

After the verb: Revisamos cuidadosamente el expediente.
At the end (often sounds more formal/complete): Revisamos el expediente cuidadosamente.

Self-check: if you can move it to the end and the meaning stays the same, it’s probably an adverb of manner.

"Así" as an adverb (not -mente)

Así is a high-frequency adverb meaning “like this / this way / thus”.

Yo pienso así: debemos revisar el expediente.
Hagámoslo así: primero verificamos los plazos y luego redactamos el escrito.

Tip: así often introduces a method, plan, or viewpoint.

Using “muy”: when it works (and when it doesn’t)

You can use muy with adverbs that express a degree/intensity:

muy claramente, muy severamente, muy cuidadosamente

But avoid muy with adverbs that describe a means/medium (how something is done “by phone/email/etc.”):

~~muy telefónicamente~~ (unnatural)
Better: por teléfono, por vía telefónica, telefónicamente (without muy)

Meaning shift: verbs that change with an adverb (salir / tratar)

Some verbs form fixed, idiomatic meanings with certain adverbs. Don’t translate word-by-word.

Quick diagnostic: choose adjective or adverb?

Ask: Do I mean “how the action happened”? → use an adverb (-mente / así / mal).
Ask: Do I mean “what someone/something is like”? → use an adjective (agrees in gender/number).
If English uses -ly, Spanish often uses -mente (but not always: badly → mal).

They normally come after the verb or at the end of the sentence.
The adverb describes the action (⇒ me llamó desesperadamente); the adjective describes the person (⇒ me llamó desesperado).

Exceptions!

Some adverbs allow muy when they express degree ⇒ muy severamente, muy claramente. It is not used with adverbs of means ⇒ *muy telefónicamente.
Change in the meaning of the verb: salir = to leave a place ⇒ salir mal = to have a bad outcome.
Change in the meaning of the verb: tratar = to talk about a topic ⇒ tratar bien = to treat someone properly.
