What these patterns are for (B2): sounding realistic about the future

In professional Spanish, you often need to talk about the future with uncertainty, a decision taken now, or a future consequence/obligation.

These four patterns help you do that without overcommitting.

Quick choice: which structure fits your intention?

Key point: after si, Spanish usually uses present (not future)

This is one of the most common errors for English speakers.

Correct: Ya veremos si me suben el sueldo.
~~Ya veremos si me subirán el sueldo.~~

Rule of thumb: In “if…” clauses about the future, Spanish often uses si + present even when English uses “will”.

“Ya + future”: calm uncertainty (wait-and-see)

Ya veremos si amplían el contrato.
Ya decidirán en Dirección si lo aprueban.

What it communicates: you are not deciding now; the outcome is still open.

“No sé si…”: two future options and how to choose

Both are correct; choose the one that matches the tone you want.
Common mistake: ~~No sé si podré a asumir…~~ → with poder, use infinitive without a: podré asumir.

“Bueno, + future”: decision made now (accepting/committing)

Use it when you decide in the moment, often after hearing information or negotiating.

Bueno, lo intentaré.
Bueno, negociaré con Legal y te digo algo mañana.
Bueno, haremos lo posible.

Contrast: Present tense can sound like a general statement, not a new commitment.

Commitment now: Bueno, haré el informe hoy.
General/habit: Bueno, hago el informe hoy. (less “decision”)

“Tendré que + infinitive”: future obligation or consequence

Use it to show that an obligation will result from a situation (often with si).

Si no suben mi sueldo, tendré que buscar otro trabajo.
Si amplían el contrato, tendré que reorganizar el equipo.

Form: tener que (not ~~tener de~~) + infinitive.

Important exception: present tengo que for a planned future obligation

If the future obligation is already scheduled/known, Spanish often uses present.

Tengo que coordinar el equipo esta semana. (already planned)
Tendré que coordinar el equipo si se confirma el proyecto. (depends on a condition)

Self-check: did I express doubt, decision, or consequence?

If it’s “wait and see” → Ya + futuro.
If you’re unsure whether something is possible → No sé si + voy a / No sé si + futuro.
If you accept/commit in the moment → Bueno, + futuro.
If it’s a result/obligation triggered by something → Tendré que + infinitivo.
After si, check you used present (not future): si + presente.

Exceptions!

You can use tener in the present ( tengo que + infinitive) to talk about a future obligation that is already planned (⇒ tengo que coordinar el equipo esta semana).
