Other adverbs: sin duda, en resumen…

Otros adverbios: sin duda, en resumen…

Estos adverbios expresan seguridad, precisión, conclusión o consecuencia en una frase.

(These adverbs express certainty, precision, a conclusion, or a consequence in a sentence.)

What these adverbs do (and why you need them)

These are sentence adverbs: they comment on the message, not on the action.

  • Certainty: sin duda / indudablemente
  • Truth/emphasis: verdaderamente
  • Specification: concretamente
  • Exactness/precision: exactamente / precisamente / justamente
  • Summary: en resumen / resumidamente
  • Change of topic: a propósito
  • Consequence / “so”: así

In conversation and professional Spanish, they help you sound clear, structured, and confident.

Form: they are invariable (no agreement)

These adverbs and adverbial phrases are invariables.

  • No gender/number changes: concretamento / concretasmenteconcretamente
  • No plural: sin dudas (in this meaning) → sin duda
CorrectIncorrect
Es, sin duda, importante.Es, sin dudas, importante.
Invierte, concretamente, en solar.Invierte, concreto, en solar.

Punctuation and position: the “comma rule” in real life

When the adverb is a comment/aside, Spanish usually sets it off with commas.

  • Middle position (most common): El sector primario es, sin duda, esencial.
  • At the start + comma: En resumen, la demanda creció.
  • After a semicolon / period: No dependemos del petróleo; concretamente, invertimos en eólica.

Tip: If you could read it as a parenthesis in English (“..., without a doubt, ...”), you probably need commas in Spanish too.

Choosing between similar ones (the typical B2 doubts)

AdverbMain useNatural translation
sin dudaStrong certaintywithout a doubt
indudablementeMore formal certaintyundoubtedly
concretamenteNarrow to a specific itemspecifically
exactamenteExact figure/wordingexactly
precisamente“To be precise” / focus on the key pointprecisely / to be specific
justamente“Just at that moment” (timing) or “exactly”just (then) / exactly

“En resumen / resumidamente”: how formal is it?

  • En resumen: standard in writing and meetings. Very common.
  • Resumidamente: more formal and less frequent; sounds like reports, presentations.

Both typically go at the beginning:

  • En resumen, reducimos costes sin recortar plantilla.
  • Resumidamente, la estrategia se basa en tres pilares.

“A propósito” vs. “Así”: don’t mix the functions

  • a propósito = you introduce a new point (often a side topic):
A propósito, ¿ya revisaste el informe?
  • así (consequence / method) = “so / this way”, linking actions and result:
Revisa los datos; así evitamos errores en la presentación.

Check: If you can replace it with por cierto, it’s probably a propósito. If you can replace it with de este modo, it’s probably así.

Self-check before you speak or write

  1. What is my intention? certainty / precision / summary / topic change / consequence
  2. Is it a comment on the whole sentence? If yes, add commas.
  3. Am I being too formal? Use en resumen more freely; save indudablemente / resumidamente for formal contexts.
  4. Did I keep it invariable? No agreement, no plural.
  1. Adverbs are invariable.
  2. They are usually set off by commas in the sentence.

1.
The comma is missing: adverbs like "without a doubt" usually go between commas to separate the clarification from the rest of the sentence.
2.
Spelling error: "summary" does not have an accent mark; writing "summáry" is incorrect.
