What these adverbs do (and what they don’t)

These words are sentence adverbs: they comment on the information, not on the action itself.

They add a speaker attitude: certainty, emphasis, precision, summary, or a side note.
They do not change for gender/number: you never “agree” them with a noun.
They often sound more structured and professional than simple alternatives.

Placement: the “comma sandwich” rule

Most of the time, place them between commas because they interrupt the sentence.

At the start	En resumen, la empresa reducirá costes.
In the middle	La empresa, sin duda, reducirá costes.
After a topic	En el sector secundario, concretamente, la siderurgia crece.

If you don’t pause when speaking, you often don’t need commas.
In formal writing, commas are the safe choice.

Meaning: choose the adverb by intention

Certainty	Sin duda / Indudablemente = “without a doubt / undoubtedly”
Emphasis (strong)	Verdaderamente = “truly / genuinely”
Specification	Concretamente = “specifically” (you narrow down)
Exactness	Exactamente / Precisamente = “exactly / precisely”
Timing coincidence	Justamente = “just (at that moment)”
Summary	En resumen / Resumidamente = “in short / to sum up”
Side topic	A propósito = “by the way / speaking of which”

Common mix-ups (and how to avoid them)

Concretamente introduces a more specific example.
- Trabaja en el sector secundario, concretamente, en la siderurgia.
- Not a general comment like “in general”.
Exactamente vs Precisamente
- Exactamente: focus on correctness/detail. El técnico explicó exactamente el procedimiento.
- Precisamente: often adds “that’s the point / ironically / at that exact point”. Precisamente por eso, hay que invertir más.
Justamente is often about timing.
- El jefe de obra llegó justamente cuando empezó la reunión.
- It can also mean “fairly/justly” in other contexts, but here it’s timing.
En resumen / Resumidamente: don’t “create” forms.

“Así” vs “así que”: consequence is different

Así (in this unit): can introduce a result-oriented next step (often like “so/that way”).
- Ven a la huerta, así vemos la explotación agrícola. (“…so we can see…”)
Así que: a clearer therefore/so connector; very common in speech.
- Se rompió una tubería; así que llamamos a un fontanero.
- ~~Se rompió una tubería; así llamamos…~~ ❌ (possible in some styles, but here it sounds off: use así que)

Register: which ones sound more formal?

To sound more professional (reports, presentations), prefer:

Indudablemente over sin duda (more formal).
En resumen / Resumidamente for summarising.

In conversation, sin duda and en resumen are natural too; resumidamente feels more “report-like”.

Self-check: am I using it correctly?

Am I adding a comment (certainty, precision, summary), not a new fact?
Can I say it with a pause? If yes, use commas.
Am I narrowing down? Use concretamente.
Am I concluding? Use en resumen.
Is it a clear consequence? Use así que.

Adverbs are invariable.
They are normally set off by commas in the sentence.

Exactamente	El técnico explicó exactamente el uso de la grúa. (The technician explained exactly* how to use the crane.*)
Precisamente	El constructor habló precisamente del cemento ecológico. (The builder spoke precisely* about eco-friendly cement.*)
Justamente	El jefe de obra llegó justamente cuando empezó la reunión. (The site manager arrived just* when the meeting started.*)
En resumen / Resumidamente	Resumidamente, la empresa invierte en energía eléctrica. (In summary, the company invests in electrical energy.)
A propósito	A propósito, la finca necesita nuevos recursos. (By the way, the farm needs new resources.)
Así (consecuencia)	Ven a la huerta, así vemos la explotación agrícola. (Come to the vegetable garden, so we can see the farm.)

Exceptions!

Indudablemente / En resumen / Resumidamente ⇒ They are used in more formal contexts.
