Quantifiers: cualquier, algún, algo...

Understanding these Spanish quantifiers

In this unit you see five very common quantifiers:

• cualquier / cualquiera
• otro / otra
• un / una ("a / one" as something new)
• algún / alguna
• algo + adjective

The goal is to choose the right one and put it in the right place in the sentence.

1. Cualquier vs. cualquiera: any (it doesn’t matter which)

Both mean “any”, but position and form change the meaning a little.

• cualquier = before a singular noun
• cualquiera = after a singular noun

• cualquier + singular noun = neutral, wide choice.
  • Puedes elegir cualquier curso presencial.
• un/una + noun + cualquiera = “just any…”, often “ordinary / nothing special”.
  • No quiero un curso cualquiera, quiero un curso bueno.

Good news: you do not change it for masculine/feminine before the noun.

• cualquier curso
• cualquier asignatura

But: after the noun, use cualquiera (fixed form).

• un curso cualquier → un curso cualquiera

• Cualquier curso me sirve. (I don’t mind which course.)
• No quiero un curso cualquiera. (I don’t want just any course.)

2. Otro / otra: a different one, another one

otro / otra means “another / a different one”.

• It replaces "another" or "a different" in English.
• It agrees with the noun: otro (masc.), otra (fem.).

Important: in Spanish you normally do not say un otro curso.

• Use otro curso, otra asignatura, etc.

• How do you say “I’d like another seminar”?
  • → Me gustaría otro seminario.

3. Un / una: introducing something new

Here un / una is used to introduce something new that you haven’t mentioned before.

• Often translated as “a / an” or “one”.
• It puts a new element into the conversation.

Tip: contrast it with otro / otra:

• un curso = a course (new information)
• otro curso = a different course (compared to one already known)

Self-check:

• First mention a course (new): He descubierto un curso online muy bueno.
• Now ask for a different one: ¿Hay otro curso parecido?

4. Algún / alguna: some, any (indefinite amount)

algún / alguna talks about an unspecified example of something.

• Often translates as “any”, “some”, “a” (but with a sense of uncertainty).
• Always used before a singular noun.

Compare:

• un seminario = a concrete seminar (you have one in mind or it’s just “a seminar”)
• algún seminario = any seminar that fits, not specified

Typical patterns:

• In questions: ¿Tienes algún curso recomendado?
• In positive statements: Necesito alguna formación extra este año.

Self-check:

• How would you say “some elective course” (you don’t know which)?
  • → algún curso optativo

5. Algo + adjective: somewhat, a bit

algo before an adjective softens it.

• algo + adjective ≈ “somewhat”, “a bit”, “rather”.
• It is more formal or neutral than un poco, but similar in idea.

Important:

• Here algo does not mean “something”.
• It only modifies the adjective that follows.

Compare:

• Quiero aprender algo. = I want to learn something. (no adjective)
• El curso es algo difícil. = The course is a bit difficult. (with adjective)

• “Any” in English is not always the same in Spanish.
  • “Any student can enroll” → Cualquier estudiante puede inscribirse.
  • “Are there any seminars?” → ¿Hay algún seminario? (not ¿Hay cualquier seminario?)
• otro vs. un:
  • First mention: Quiero hacer un curso.
  • Second, different one: El viernes no puedo, necesito otro curso.
• cualquier vs. un curso cualquiera:
  • Cualquier curso me sirve. = I’m flexible, all are OK.
  • No voy a pagar por un curso cualquiera. = I don’t want something mediocre.

8. Final self-check: can you do this?

Try to answer mentally in Spanish before you look at the suggested answer.

1. Say: “Any in-person course works for me.”
   • → Me sirve cualquier curso presencial.
2. Say: “I don’t want this course; I want another (different) course.”
   • → No quiero este curso; quiero otro curso.
3. Ask: “Is there any seminar this week?” (unspecified)
   • → ¿Hay algún seminario esta semana?
4. Say: “The program is somewhat demanding at the beginning.”
   • → El programa es algo exigente al principio.
5. Say, with a negative nuance: “I don’t want just any cheap course.”
   • → No quiero un curso cualquiera y barato.

If you can form and understand these sentences, you are ready to use these quantifiers confidently in conversation.
