Cualquier vs. cualquiera: the key difference

cualquier = determiner (goes before a noun): any / whichever.
cualquiera = pronoun (stands alone) or comes after a noun: anyone / anything, often with a “random/just any” nuance.

Meaning check: “any” vs. “just any / random”

cualquier + noun focuses on free choice among options: any office is fine.
noun + cualquiera often implies low standards / random choice: just any course.

Compare

Necesito cualquier curso que me dé créditos. (I don’t care which one, any that meets the condition.)
No quiero un curso cualquiera; quiero uno útil. (Not a random/mediocre one.)

Word order: the common trap

Correct: cualquier goes before the noun: cualquier oficina.
Correct: cualquiera goes after the noun: una oficina cualquiera.
Incorrect: ~~cualquiera oficina~~ / ~~cualquier oficina cualquiera~~ (usually unnatural).

Pronoun use: cualquiera / cualesquiera

cualquiera = “anyone/anything” (one unspecified person/thing):
- Cualquiera (de nosotros) lo haría.
cualesquiera = plural pronoun (“whichever ones”):
- Cualesquiera de esos libros te ayudarán.

Note: Before a noun, Spanish normally uses cualquier (singular) even if the meaning is plural: cualquier oficina, cualquier estudiante.

Otro / otra: “another” (not “any”)

otro / otra = a different additional one.
Use it when you mean one more or a different option, not free choice.

Practical clue: In questions and offers, algún/alguna is very common when you don’t know if it exists.

Algo + adjective: “somewhat” (not “some”)

algo + adjective = somewhat / a bit.
It modifies an adjective, not a noun.

El curso es algo exigente al principio.
La plataforma es algo lenta hoy.
Incorrect: ~~algo seminario~~ (you need algún seminario).

Fast self-check (choose the right quantifier)

If there is a noun right after it, and you mean “any”: use cualquier + noun.
If it stands alone (“anyone/anything”): use cualquiera (plural: cualesquiera).
If the noun comes first and you mean “just any / random”: use noun + cualquiera.
If you mean “another/additional”: use otro/otra.
If you mean “is there some…?”: use algún/alguna.
If you mean “somewhat + adjective”: use algo + adjective.

Cualquiera comes after the noun: un curso cualquiera.
Cualquiera as a pronoun is used to refer to any person or thing, without specifying: Cualquiera (de nosotros) lo haría.
Cualesquiera in the plural as a pronoun is used to refer to several people or things, in a non-specific or general way: Cualesquiera de esos libros te ayudarán.
