Verbos semiauxiliares: hacer noche, tener lugar, dar clase...

Los verbos semiauxiliares como hacer, tener, dar y poner forman expresiones fijas con significados específicos.

(Semi-auxiliary verbs such as hacer, tener, dar, and poner form fixed expressions with specific meanings.)

Fixed expressions (collocations): learn them as one “unit”

These are verb + noun combinations that work like a single verb in Spanish. They are very common in professional contexts (maintenance, scheduling, training).

  • hacer noche = to spend the night somewhere (because you stay over)
  • tener lugar = to take place (event happens / is held)
  • dar clase = to teach / give a class (a session or training)
  • poner fecha = to set a date (agree on a date)

Key idea: don’t translate word-for-word. Say the whole expression.

How to use them: only the verb changes

The noun part usually stays the same. You conjugate the verb as needed.

Expression What changes Example (natural)
hacer noche hacer → hice / hará / hemos hecho… Si la reparación se alarga, haremos noche aquí.
tener lugar tener → tiene / tendrá / tuvo… La inspección tendrá lugar el jueves a primera hora.
dar clase dar → doy / dará / di… Mañana doy clase de seguridad laboral.
poner fecha poner → ponemos / pusimos / pondremos… Hoy ponemos fecha y lo confirmo por email.

What to pay attention to (common mistakes)

  • 1) Articles: these expressions usually go without an article.

    hizo la noche → hizo noche

    poner una fecha → poner fecha

  • 2) Don’t calque English: Spanish prefers its own fixed phrase.

    tomar lugar → tener lugar (Spain)

    hacer clase → dar clase

  • 3) The subject matters: “tener lugar” is about events, not people.

    El técnico tiene lugar mañana. → La revisión tiene lugar mañana.

Self-check (before you speak or write)

  1. Am I using a fixed expression (not a literal translation)?

  2. Did I conjugate only the verb (hacer/tener/dar/poner)?

  3. Did I avoid the article: noche / lugar / clase / fecha (usually no “la/una”)?

  4. Is the subject logical (event → tener lugar)?
