Ayer fui a la ópera en el Teatro Real con una compañera del trabajo. La puesta en escena era moderna y la coreografía del segundo acto me sorprendió para bien, aunque al principio me pareció un poco fría. La compañía de danza clásica estuvo muy precisa y el director supo mantener el ritmo y el compás. En el foso destacaron el clarinete y el violonchelo; sin embargo, en algún momento la trompeta tapó la armonía. Hi,

I’m finishing a short piece for the company’s cultural bulletin about last night’s performance at the Teatro Real. Can you send me 6–8 lines with your opinion? I’m especially interested in:

  • the staging and the choreography (whether they worked for you);
  • the sound in the hall: rhythm, harmony and whether the voices were clear;
  • whether you would recommend the production and where you would sit next time (stalls/balcony, near the front or at the back).

Claro. En general, la puesta en escena me pareció atrevida y bien pensada, aunque en algunas escenas de conjunto la coreografía resultó algo sobrecargada. En cuanto a la música, la orquesta mantuvo un buen ritmo y la armonía fue clara; sin embargo, en los pasajes más densos el volumen de la orquesta tapó a los solistas y perdimos matices de las voces.

La recomendaría, especialmente para quienes aprecian montajes contemporáneos. La próxima vez me sentaría en el patio, hacia el centro, porque desde allí se entendían mejor las voces y se apreciaba el equilibrio entre orquesta y canto hasta donde llegaba el sonido.

Sure. Overall, the staging struck me as bold and thoughtfully conceived, although in some ensemble scenes the choreography felt a bit overworked. As for the music, the orchestra kept a good pulse and the harmonies were clear; however, in the denser passages the orchestra’s volume sometimes masked the soloists and we lost some vocal nuances.

I would recommend it, especially to those who enjoy contemporary productions. Next time I’d sit in the stalls, toward the center, because from there the voices came through more clearly and the balance between orchestra and singing was easier to appreciate.
