The new exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Architecture proposes a journey through Barcelona, from Modernism to today’s urban intervention. The show juxtaposes original plans, restored pieces, and an immersive installation that plays with the visitor’s sense of scale. Although not all the rooms are equally accessible, the layout helps to contextualize why certain materials and forms had an impact on the city.

In the final section, a debate is raised about heritage: what deserves protection and what can be transformed? The art critic in the catalogue highlights that the minimalist aesthetic of some proposals does not seek to “please,” but rather to evoke everyday life and the real use of spaces. Mañana tengo que preparar una nota para la crítica de arte del periódico, así que hoy he pasado por el centro cultural nuevo. La intervención urbana en la plaza me ha parecido más apreciativa que provocadora, aunque el montaje es muy grande y la escala impresiona. Dentro hay una instalación minimalista que contraponen con el modernismo del edificio, y el guía la contextualiza con referencias a la vanguardia. Although the Modernisme idea sounds good, I’m worried it might be too touristy. What do you recommend? And where to eat nearby?

Yo haría la ruta de Modernismo, aunque sea muy conocida, porque permite ver la arquitectura "en contexto": fachadas, patios y materiales en su sitio. Se puede comparar bien con lo contemporáneo, ya que muchos recursos (luz, inspiración en la naturaleza, ornamentación) siguen teniendo repercusión hoy.

Dicho esto, si prefieres algo menos turístico y más crítico, la exposición "Ciudad en capas" en el CCCB es una buena alternativa por la instalación y el enfoque sobre intervención urbana.

Mi propuesta: ruta de Modernismo por la mañana y, si te apetece, pasar al CCCB por la tarde (suele estar más tranquilo). Para comer, prueba la zona de Enric Granados o Rambla de Catalunya; hay menús buenos y locales con encanto.

I would do the Modernisme route, even though it’s very well-known, because it lets you see the architecture “in context”: façades, courtyards, and materials in their place. It can be compared well with the contemporary, since many resources (light, inspiration from nature, ornamentation) still have an impact today.

That said, if you prefer something less touristy and more critical, the exhibition “City in layers” at the CCCB is a good alternative because of the installation and the focus on urban intervention.

My suggestion: Modernisme route in the morning and, if you feel like it, stop by the CCCB in the afternoon (it’s usually quieter). For lunch, try the Enric Granados area or Rambla de Catalunya; there are good set menus and charming places.
