El superlativo absoluto expresa un grado muy alto de una cualidad.

(The absolute superlative expresses a very high degree of a quality.)

What is the “absolute superlative” in Spanish?

The absolute superlative is used to say that a quality is very strong, without comparing with anyone or anything else.

  • No comparison: it only intensifies.
    • El interés es altísimo. ⇒ the interest rate is very, very high.
    • El contrato es superclaro. ⇒ the contract is extremely clear.
  • In this unit you focus on colloquial forms:
    • super-, extra-, re-, archi-, ultra-
    • repetition of the adjective or noun: seguro seguro, vino vino

How are these forms written?

Very important: in standard written Spanish, these prefixes are written together with the adjective.

Correct superseguro, extracara, reclarito, archiconocido, ultraflexible
Incorrect súper seguro, extra caro, re clarito, archi conocido, ultra flexible
  • One word: prefix + adjective form one single word.
  • No extra “muy”: do not combine with muy.
    • muy superclarosuperclaro
  • Keep normal agreement:
    • superclaro (m.sg.), superclaros (m.pl.)
    • superclara (f.sg.), superclaras (f.pl.)

What is the nuance of each prefix?

All intensify, but some are more colloquial than others. Think of them on a line:

More neutral / formal extra-, ultra-, archi-
Everyday colloquial super-
Very colloquial re- (often in Latin America and in informal speech)
  • super-: very common in informal spoken Spanish.
    • una hipoteca superventajosa – a super advantageous mortgage.
  • extra-: suggests “more than normal”, “too much”.
    • una comisión extracara – outrageously expensive fee.
  • re-: very colloquial, affectionate or emphatic.
    • reclaro, reclarito – crystal clear.
  • archi-: often with adjectives like conocido, famoso.
    • un banco archiconocido – a very well-known bank.
  • ultra-: often with technical or marketing language.
    • condiciones ultraflexibles – ultra-flexible conditions.

Repetition: “seguro seguro”, “vino vino”

Repetition is another way to intensify.

  • Adjective repetition: emphasises that the quality is really true.
    • un banco serio serio – really serious, trustworthy bank.
    • un préstamo seguro seguro – truly safe loan.
  • Noun repetition: emphasises authenticity or quality.
    • vino vino – real wine, not diluted or low-quality.
    • café café – proper coffee, not instant or weak.

Notice:

  • Normally there is no comma in writing: serio serio, not serio, serio.
  • No connector between them: seguro seguro, not seguro y seguro.

Where do these words go in the sentence?

They follow normal adjective position rules. The prefix does not change the position.

  • After the noun (most cases):
    • una comisión extracara
    • condiciones ultraflexibles
    • un banco serio serio
  • Before the noun with adjectives that often go before the noun.
    • un archiconocido banco internacional
    • un superbuen asesor (colloquial)

Self-check:

  • If the normal adjective is claro, you can say:
    • un contrato claro
    • un contrato superclaro
    • un contrato claro claro
  • The position of claro, superclaro, claro claro stays the same.

When is “re-” and repetition appropriate?

This is important for register (formal vs informal).

  • Formal / written bank context (contracts, emails):
    • Prefer: muy claro, clarísimo, extraalto, ultraflexible.
    • Avoid: reclaro, serio serio.
  • Informal conversation with friends, colleagues, or with a friendly adviser:
    • El asesor fue reclarito.
    • Queremos un banco serio serio.

Guideline:

  • With strangers in a professional situation: super-, extra-, ultra- are safer.
  • With friends / relaxed talk: you can also use re- and repetition.

Step-by-step: can I form it correctly?

  1. Choose the adjective you want to intensify.
    • caro, flexible, claro, seguro, conocido
  2. Choose the strategy:
    • Prefix: super-, extra-, re-, archi-, ultra-
    • Repetition: seguro seguro, vino vino
  3. Write the prefix together with the adjective.
    • caro → extracaro
    • flexible → ultraflexible
    • claro → superclaro / reclaro
  4. Make it agree in gender and number.
    • extracaro, extracara, extracaros, extracaras
    • superclaro, superclaras, etc.
  5. Place it where the normal adjective would go.

Self-check: do I sound natural?

Before you speak or write, quickly ask yourself:

  • 1. Am I comparing?
    • If you are comparing, use normal comparatives: más caro que.
    • If you only want intensity, use these forms: extracaro, ultraflexible, seguro seguro.
  • 2. Is it one word?
    • If you see two words: super caro, fix it: supercaro.
  • 3. Am I mixing intensifiers?
    • Avoid combinations like muy supercaro, re muy claro.
    • Choose one: muy caro or extracaro.
  • 4. Is the register appropriate?
    • Email to your bank: condiciones muy claras, condiciones ultraflexibles.
    • Conversation with a friend: las explicó reclarito, era caro caro.

If you can answer these questions easily, you have control of this grammar in real conversations about money, banks and mortgages.

  1. The absolute superlative does not compare, it only intensifies.
  2. The prefixes are attached directly to the adjective.
FormExample
Super + adjectiveEl banco ofrece un crédito superseguro para viviendas. (The bank offers a super-safe loan for housing.)
Extra + adjectiveEl cliente paga una comisión extracara por el servicio. (The client pays an extra-expensive fee for the service.)
Re + adjectiveEl asesor explica el contrato reclaro al cliente. (The advisor explains the contract super-clearly to the client.)
Archi + adjectiveEs un banco archiconocido en el sector financiero. (It is an extremely well-known bank in the financial sector.)
Ultra + adjectiveLa hipoteca tiene condiciones ultraflexibles. (The mortgage has ultra-flexible conditions.)
Repetition of the adjectiveEl préstamo es seguro seguro para familias. (The loan is really, really safe for families.)

Exceptions!

  1. The prefix re is more frequent in colloquial language.
  2. You can also repeat a noun to emphasise a real quality (vino vino ⇒ wine that is not watered down).
