Absolute superlative: extra, ultra, super...

Superlativo absoluto: extra, ultra, super...

El superlativo absoluto expresa un grado muy alto de una cualidad.

(The absolute superlative expresses a very high degree of a quality.)

What you are doing here: absolute intensity (not comparison)

These forms express an absolute superlative: they make an adjective stronger, but they do not compare two things.

  • superseguro = very / extremely safe
  • extracara = extremely expensive (often with a negative tone)
  • archiconocido = very well-known (almost “iconic”)
  • ultraflexibles = extremely flexible
  • seguro seguro = really safe (spoken emphasis)

The key spelling rule: prefixes are attached

With these intensifying prefixes, Spanish normally writes one word.

Correct Incorrect
superventajoso súper ventajoso / super-ventajoso
extracara extra cara / extra-cara
ultrafácil ultra fácil / ultrafacil
archiconocido archi conocido / archi-conocido
  • No hyphen in standard Spanish.
  • No space between prefix and adjective.
  • Keep the adjective’s accents: fácil → ultrafácil.

Agreement still works: gender and number are on the adjective

The prefix does not change agreement. The adjective still agrees with the noun.

Noun Adjective Example
un préstamo (m.) superventajoso un préstamo superventajoso
una comisión (f.) extracara una comisión extracara
condiciones (pl.) ultraflexibles condiciones ultraflexibles

Self-check: if you change the noun to feminine/plural, the ending must change too.

Meaning and register: what each option “sounds like”

  • super-: neutral, very common. superclaro, superútil
  • extra-: often “more than normal”, frequently negative in finance/fees. extracaro
  • archi-: “famously / notoriously”, slightly emphatic. archiconocido
  • ultra-: very strong, a bit formal/technical sometimes. ultraflexible
  • re-: very colloquial; especially common in Argentina. reinteresante, reclaro

In professional contexts (emails, meetings), super- and ultra- usually feel safest.

Repetition: “seguro seguro” and why it works

Repeating an adjective is a common spoken strategy to add emphasis.

  • claro claro = really clear (no doubt)
  • seguro seguro = genuinely safe / guaranteed

Typical use: negotiation, reassurance, insisting on conditions.

Spelling: two words (not one).

  • Correct: condiciones claras claras
  • Incorrect: clarasclaras

Extra intensity: combining repetition with -ísimo (advanced but common)

You can push intensity further by adding -ísimo/-ísima after repeating:

  • claro clarísimo = crystal clear
  • seguro segurísimo = absolutely safe

Use it when you want to sound very emphatic. In formal writing, don’t overuse it.

Quick checklist before you speak

  1. Do I want intensity (not comparison)?
  2. Prefix attached? super + adj → superadj
  3. Accent kept? fácil → ultrafácil
  4. Agreement correct? extracaro / extracara / extracaros / extracaras
  5. Register OK? re- is very colloquial/regional.
  1. The absolute superlative does not compare; it only intensifies.
  2. The prefixes are attached directly to the adjective.
FormaEjemplo
SuperEl banco ofrece un crédito superseguro para viviendas. (The bank offers a super-secure loan for homes.)
ExtraEl cliente paga una comisión extracara por el servicio. (The client pays an extra-expensive fee for the service.)
ArchiEs un banco archiconocido en el sector financiero. (It’s an extremely well-known bank in the financial sector.)
UltraLa hipoteca tiene condiciones ultraflexibles. (The mortgage has ultra-flexible conditions.)
Repetición del adjetivoEl préstamo es seguro seguro para familias. (The loan is safe, safe for families.)

Exceptions!

  1. You can also add a superlative to give more intensity: El contrato es claro clarísimo.
  2. The prefix re- is widely used in informal speech in Argentina: la reunión fue reinteresante.
